What Is DTF St. Louis About? The Plot Explained
The show follows Floyd Smernitch (David Harbour), a sign language interpreter at a local TV station who is navigating a dull patch in his marriage to Carol (Linda Cardellini). Floyd befriends his coworker, weatherman Clark Forrest (Jason Bateman), unaware that Clark is secretly having an affair with Carol .
Clark introduces Floyd to a fictional dating app called DTF St. Louisโthe acronym stands for “down to f**k”โencouraging him to seek extramarital connections. The recommendation sets off a chain of events that leads to Floyd’s death. The series opens with his body behind crime scene tape, and detectives *Jodie Plumb* (Joy Sunday) and Donoghue Homer (Richard Jenkins) work to uncover the truth through interviews with Carol, Clark, and others .
“The series is about a love triangle between three adults experiencing middle-age malaise that leads to one of them ending up dead.” – HBO Official Logline
Despite Harbour’s character being killed off early, he appears throughout in flashbacks as the story explains the events that led to his demise .
Cast and Characters
The series features a strong ensemble cast :
- David Harbour as Floyd Smernitch, an ASL interpreter and former Playgirl model dealing with insecurities following a past accident
- Jason Bateman as Clark Forrest, a local weatherman whose affable exterior masks hidden motives
- Linda Cardellini as Carol Love-Smernitch, Floyd’s wife who works as a baseball umpire on the side
- Richard Jenkins as Detective Donoghue Homer, investigating Floyd’s death
- Joy Sunday as Jodie Plumb, a special crimes officer assigned to the murder case
- Arlan Ruf as Richard, Floyd’s stepson
- Peter Sarsgaard and Chris Perfetti in key supporting roles
Harbour describes his character as “so vulnerable and so sweet” compared to his Stranger Things role. “He’s not capable like Hopper. He’s not like a big superhero at all. He’s battling middle ageโthat’s his biggest monster,” Harbour told IndieWire .
Early Critical Reception
The series currently holds an 80% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics have praised the performances and the show’s unique tone .
“It’s an ideal blend of character drama and murder-mystery, and the way Conrad frames their livesโwith the camera tilting up from the smooth black pavement of a residential street or the jagged brown grass of a neglected lawnโis equally absorbing.” – IndieWire (A- grade)
Slant gave the series 3 out of 4, noting that it “boasts a unique charm that sneaks up on you.” The Wrap added: “In an era rife with domestic crime shows that strain to keep viewers guessing, Conrad disarms us with seductive ease, then tickles our anxiety with naughty, amusing and horizon-opening twists” .
However, TIME offered a mixed perspective, writing that “the murder is, at best, a distraction from what makes DTF unique; at worst, it’s a crutch supporting three characters whose creator failed to build them a less conventional plot” .
The Story Behind the Series
The show was originally inspired by a 2017 New Yorker article titled “My Dentist’s Murder Trial: Adultery, False Identities, and a Lethal Sedation” by James Lasdun. The article explored a real-life case involving a dentist, infidelity, and murder .
David Harbour has been developing the project for several years. The series went through different iterations, with Pedro Pascal originally attached before Jason Bateman came onboard. Harbour serves as an executive producer alongside Bateman and Conrad .
Conrad, who wrote and directed all episodes, built the series around a central idea that Harbour shared with The Hollywood Reporter: “Nobody’s normal, they just look that way from across the street. That’s really what the whole series is trying to be, this empathetic response for weird people looking for meaning”.
