The latest episode of SBS’s Friday-Saturday drama Phantom Lawyer delivered a major shock to viewers. What started as a case about a murdered scientist quickly turned into a nightmare for the main character, Shin Yi-rang. By the end of Episode 5, the lawyer who helps ghosts seek justice found himself handcuffed and arrested for murder.

The episode, which aired on March 27, pulled in strong numbers. It recorded a nationwide rating of 8.7 percent and peaked at 10.3 percent during its broadcast. The drama took first place in its time slot, proving that audiences are hooked on this mix of legal drama and supernatural mystery.

A New Client with a Tragic Past

This week’s case centered on Jeon Sang-ho, a brilliant scientist who won “Scientist of the Year” three times. His ghost appeared to Yi-rang, but unlike previous spirits, he did not immediately accept that he was dead. He used logic and science to argue against his own death, creating a strange start to their meeting.

The suspect in his death was his wife, Kim Soo-jung. She had been tried for his murder but was found not guilty because there was not enough evidence. However, the prosecution appealed the decision, and new evidence surfaced suggesting a third person was involved in the crime.

The case took an emotional turn when viewers learned more about the couple’s private struggles. Flashbacks showed Kim Soo-jung crying and pushing her husband away. Scattered pills around her suggested she was dealing with postpartum depression and the stress of raising a child alone. Her husband had neglected her during this difficult time.

The Truth Behind the Murder

As Yi-rang dug deeper, the truth became clear. The real killer was Kim Tae-jun, Kim Soo-jung’s father and the director of a research institute. But the case was not simple. Jeon Sang-ho did not want his wife punished. He felt guilty for not being there for her during her hardest days.

The ghost of the scientist blamed himself. His regret and sense of responsibility gave the story a deeper emotional layer than a typical murder case.

A Ghost Takes Control

Things got intense when Jeon Sang-ho’s ghost saw his own dead body. Father Mateo had warned Yi-rang earlier that this moment would be dangerous. He said the ghost would lose control and be taken over by rage.

That prediction came true. The ghost completely took over Yi-rang’s body. Driven by anger and pain, Yi-rang—while possessed—confronted a key figure and screamed, “Why did you kill me!”

The moment showed how deep the connection between Yi-rang and the dead can go. The emotions were not just heard; they were felt directly through the lawyer’s actions.

Han Na-hyun Faces the Impossible

Han Na-hyun, played by Esom, once again found herself questioning everything she believed. As a logical, cold-blooded ace lawyer, she has struggled to accept Yi-rang’s claim that he can see and talk to ghosts.

During this episode, Yi-rang showed her formulas written on a chalkboard while possessed. The handwriting matched Jeon Sang-ho’s exactly. This evidence left Han Na-hyun in disbelief. She started to wonder if there was more to Yi-rang’s ability than she wanted to admit.

The two lawyers clashed again over the case, but this time the line between truth and the supernatural became harder for her to ignore.

Yang Do-kyung Gets Closer to the Secret

Meanwhile, Yang Do-kyung, played by Kim Kyung-nam, moved from suspicion to action. The head of Taebaek Law Firm has lost twice to Yi-rang, a rookie he had never heard of before. He started digging into Yi-rang’s background to understand how this newcomer kept beating him.

Drug boss Jo Ki-cheol, now in jail after his hideout was exposed, told Yang something strange. He said, “That lawyer wasn’t normal. It was Lee Kang-poong,” referring to a past case where Yi-rang appeared to act like a dead gangster.

Yang then visited Emma, the real culprit from the idol trainee case. If Emma confirmed she also saw Yi-rang act and speak exactly like the dead Kim Soo-ah, Yang would have proof that something unnatural was going on. His investigation now threatens to expose Yi-rang’s secret.

The Shocking Ending

The episode ended with a stunning twist. Police arrived and arrested Yi-rang right there on the spot. They told him that gloves with his fingerprints were found near the place where Jeon Sang-ho’s body was disposed.

Yi-rang protested his innocence, but the evidence against him looked strong. The man who usually helped ghosts seek justice now found himself trapped as a murder suspect. The tables had turned completely.

The story shifted from Yi-rang chasing the truth to him becoming the center of suspicion. The one who sought answers now has to defend himself against serious accusations.

Where to Watch

For viewers outside South Korea, Phantom Lawyer is available on multiple streaming platforms. In the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and other regions, episodes can be found on Netflix with subtitles in different languages.

Indian audiences can also watch the show on Netflix. The drama airs new episodes every Friday and Saturday, with Episode 6 scheduled to release on March 28.

The show follows the simulcast model, meaning international viewers get the episodes shortly after they air in South Korea. Episode 6 will likely bring answers about Yi-rang’s arrest and whether his secret will finally come out to those around him.
