Netflix has finally set a date for the return of Aang and his friends. The live-action adaptation of the beloved animated series will drop its second season on June 25, 2026. Along with the release date, the streaming service shared a behind-the-scenes featurette giving viewers a fresh look at the upcoming episodes, including the first proper glimpse of the Earth Kingdom capital, Ba Sing Se.

The announcement comes after a two-year wait since the first season premiered in 2024. The show was quickly renewed for both Season 2 and Season 3, with production happening back-to-back to avoid long gaps between seasons.

What to Expect from the New Season

The second season will adapt the “Book 2: Earth” storyline from the original cartoon. After mastering waterbending in the first season, Aang (Gordon Cormier) must now learn earthbending. This journey takes him and his friends—Katara (Kiawentiio) and Sokka (Ian Ousley)—further into the Earth Kingdom.

The group’s mission becomes more dangerous as they search for the Earth King to gain support against Fire Lord Ozai (Daniel Dae Kim). The new season will also introduce the mysterious city of Ba Sing Se, a massive walled kingdom that plays a central role in the original story. The behind-the-scenes video released by Netflix shows detailed outdoor sets built for the city, with executive producer Christine Boylan noting that all the buildings seen are real structures.

A Fan-Favorite Character Joins the Cast

Toph Beifong, the blind earthbending prodigy loved by fans of the original series, will make her live-action debut. Actress Miyako was selected from over 6,000 hopefuls to play the role. The casting process reportedly involved a consultant from the blindness community to ensure authentic representation.

Toph’s arrival marks a major turning point for Aang’s training. Earthbending does not come naturally to him, and his early interactions with Toph are expected to be rocky, mirroring the dynamic from the original show. The character is known for her tough personality and incredible skills, and she quickly becomes a key member of Team Avatar.

Production Details and Cast

The main cast from Season 1 returns, including Dallas Liu as Prince Zuko, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Uncle Iroh, Elizabeth Yu as Princess Azula, and Momona Tamada as Ty Lee. New additions for Season 2 include Miya Cech as Toph Beifong, along with several other actors joining the expanding world.

Behind the scenes, there has been a change in leadership. Albert Kim, who developed the series and served as showrunner for Season 1, stepped down in April 2025. Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani now lead the show as executive producers. Kim remains involved as an executive producer. Michael Goi directed the first two episodes of Season 2, while Raisani directed episodes three and four. Roseanne Liang and Jet Wilkinson handled the remaining episodes.

Back-to-Back Production Means Less Waiting

Seasons 2 and 3 were filmed consecutively, with production on Season 2 finishing in May 2025. The final season began filming shortly after and has since wrapped. This approach allows Netflix to deliver the remaining two seasons without the long delays that often affect large-scale productions.

The live-action series is set to conclude with Season 3, matching the original animated show’s three-season structure. The third season will adapt the “Book 3: Fire” storyline, bringing Aang’s journey to its conclusion.

What the First Look Reveals

The behind-the-scenes featurette released by Netflix offers more than just a release date. Viewers get a look at the scale of the Ba Sing Se sets, which executive producer Jabbar Raisani said allowed the actors and characters to grow and figure out who they are in the new season. The video also shows Miyako as Toph in action, giving fans a preview of how the character will look and move in the live-action format.
