Jack Black officially became the newest member of Saturday Night Live‘s exclusive Five-Timers Club on April 4, 2026, during his fifth time hosting the legendary sketch show. The 56-year-old actor and comedian received a star-powered welcome that included fellow club members Tina Fey, Jonah Hill, Melissa McCarthy, Candice Bergen, and musical guest Jack White.

The celebration turned Black’s opening monologue into a full comedy rock event, complete with spiderwebs, jokes about the club’s age, and a powerful rendition of “Seven Nation Army.”

What Is the SNL Five-Timers Club?

The Five-Timers Club is an unofficial but well-known group of celebrities who have hosted Saturday Night Live five or more times. The idea started in December 1990 when Tom Hanks hosted for the fifth time. During his monologue, he joked about a club for repeat hosts, and the bit stuck.

Since then, getting inducted has become a big deal. New members receive a velvet robe with the number 5 on it. The show usually brings back other club members to help welcome the newest inductee during their monologue.

The club now has more than 25 members. Alec Baldwin holds the record for most hosting gigs with 17 times. Steve Martin follows close behind with 16. John Goodman has hosted 13 times, while Tom Hanks and Buck Henry have each done it 10 times.

Jack Black’s Induction Ceremony

Black’s induction happened during his monologue on the April 4, 2026 episode. He started by saying, “It’s a huge honor to join the five-timer club. I’m a five-timer!”

Then Jonah Hill walked on stage wearing his own Five-Timers robe. When Black asked what Hill had been doing, Hill joked, “I’ve actually been working on Superbad 2!” before admitting, “No, I just really like the sound of applause.”

Hill brought Black to the Five-Timers lounge, but something was off. The room was covered in spiderwebs. Black said, “There’s evil lurking around every corner.”

Tina Fey appeared from the shadows wearing a furry coat. “It’s just me. It’s just regular Tina Fey,” she said. She congratulated Black with a joke: “You’re officially the first Black in the Five-Timers club.”

“What started off as a one-off joke in a Tom Hanks monologue has been brought back so many times that it has literally been run into the ground. For example, and this is true, this is my fifth Five-Timers club stint.” — Tina Fey

Fey wore a special “SNL UK First-Timer’s” jacket, complete with Paddington Bear fur trim, because she recently became the first person to host the British version of the show.

Candice Bergen, the first woman to join the Five-Timers Club, then appeared. She made a joke about spending time with Paddington: “Let’s just say we found something that he likes way more than marmalade.”

Melissa McCarthy popped up from behind the bar. She complained, “All they’ve got are these warm cans of John Mulaney’s beer.” When Fey asked if the beer was non-alcoholic, McCarthy replied, “Not if you fill them with vodka!” before shotgunning a can.

Jack White and the Rock Finale

Marcello Hernández showed up as his popular character Domingo. But before he could finish his signature song, Jack White hit him on the head with a frying pan and said, “No cast members allowed.”

Black then decided to fix the dying Five-Timers lounge “with the power of rock.” He sang a changed version of The White Stripes‘ hit “Seven Nation Army,” with Jack White on guitar and background dancers in wizard costumes.

“I can’t believe this is really happening. I think I’m in heaven. Am I in heaven?” — Jack Black during the musical number

Black sang new words: “We got Melissa, Candice Bergen, Jonah Hill and Mrs. Tina Fey, it’s my nightmare blunt rotation, and I think it’s gonna save the day.”

The monologue ended with Black receiving his own Five-Timers jacket. He sang, “And when I put this jacket on, you know I feel like I am ready to host.”

Jack White Also Joined a Five-Timers Club

April 4, 2026 marked Jack White‘s fifth time as a solo musical guest on SNL. This gave him his own spot in the musical guest version of the Five-Timers Club. He has also appeared once with The White Stripes, making his total SNL musical appearances six.

During the monologue, White joked about needing to leave because “the five-time musical guests only get their parking validated for 15 minutes.”

Black’s SNL History

Jack Black first appeared on SNL in May 1998 as a special musical guest with his band Tenacious D. He got his first hosting job in January 2002 and used his monologue to sing about living out a dream.

His December 2005 episode became famous. It included the “Christmastime for the Jews” cartoon, the debut of the “Lazy Sunday” digital short, and the first appearance of the “Two A-Holes” sketch.

Black last hosted in April 2025, almost exactly one year before his induction episode.
