The hit Apple TV+ series Shrinking is ending its three-season story about grief and moving forward. But the show is not ending. Creator Bill Lawrence has cleared up confusion about Season 4 and confirmed that a time jump is coming.
The Season 3 finale drops on April 8, 2026. Lawrence recently took to social media to explain what fans can expect next. Some viewers got worried after his first posts. They thought the show might restart with the same actors playing brand new characters. Lawrence fixed that misunderstanding right away.
“This all got weird. lol. My bad. Yeah. They’re the same characters,” Lawrence wrote on X after people began to misunderstand his initial post.
The show was always planned as a three-season story about loss, forgiveness, and moving ahead. Now that story ends with Season 3. But the creators want to keep going with a fresh start.
Time Jump Changes Everything for Season 4
Lawrence confirmed that Season 4 will have a time jump. This means when the show returns, time will have passed since the Season 3 finale. How much time? The creator did not give a specific number. But he wants viewers to feel like they are watching a different chapter of these characters’ lives.
“People shouldn’t be surprised if there’s a time jump and it feels like we’re telling a completely different story,” Lawrence told Variety.
The characters will still be the same people fans know. Jason Segel returns as Jimmy Laird, the therapist who lost his wife. Harrison Ford is back as Dr. Paul Rhoades, Jimmy’s mentor and own therapist. The whole main cast returns including Jessica Williams, Christa Miller, Luke Tennie, Michael Urie, Lukita Maxwell, and Ted McGinley.
Why the Change After Three Seasons
Bill Lawrence explained that the first three seasons told one complete story. That story was about Jimmy dealing with his wife Tia’s death. It showed him fixing his relationship with his daughter Alice. It also showed him finding his way back to being a good therapist and friend.
Now that story is done. The creators do not want to repeat the same problems.
The same way that Shrinking, if the fourth season started and Jason Segel woke up and went, ‘you know I’ve been thinking about it, and I was still super sad about my wife,’ everybody would be like, What are you doing? We saw that already,” Lawrence explained to Deadline.
He added that the writers room for Season 4 is already deep into work. They know what happens next. Lawrence says he thinks people will like it.
Same Show, Same Place, New Problems
The show is not moving to a new city. The setting stays the same Pasadena/Altadena neighborhood in Los Angeles. The same friends, coworkers, and family will be around. But the problems they face will be different.
Lawrence described Season 4 as “a new story with the same cast.” He told fans on X that they are doing this because “we love each other.” The cast and crew enjoy working together. So they want to keep making the show. But they do not want to repeat old stories.
Apple TV+ renewed Shrinking for Season 4 back in January. That happened even before Season 3 started airing. The streaming service clearly believes in the show. The series has earned multiple Emmy nominations. Michael Urie won a Critics’ Choice Award for his role. The whole cast also got a Screen Actors Guild nomination for best ensemble.
What the Season 3 Finale Sets Up
The Season 3 finale logline gives some hints. Apple TV says, “As Alice heads to college, Jimmy tries to repair things before it’s too late. Gaby makes a happy discovery.”
Alice (played by Lukita Maxwell) is Jimmy’s daughter. She is leaving for college. This naturally creates a time jump situation. When Season 4 begins, Alice may already be in school. Jimmy will be living alone. That changes everything about his daily life.
Gaby (played by Jessica Williams) makes a happy discovery. That could set up a new romantic story or a career change for her character.
The time jump will let the show skip past the immediate fallout of these events. Instead of watching everyone adjust day by day, Season 4 can drop viewers into a new normal. That keeps the show feeling fresh.
Fans React to the News
Social media lit up after Lawrence’s posts. Some fans were confused at first. But after he cleared things up, most reacted with excitement.
One fan on Instagram wrote, “It’s exciting to see where they’ll take the story. A jump in time could mean anything — more history, new challenges, and undoubtedly more of the humor we love.”
Others appreciated that the show is not dragging out the grief story. Jimmy has spent three seasons healing. Stretching that further would feel unnatural. A time jump lets the character show growth without having to explain every small step.

What Stays the Same
Viewers worried about big changes can relax. The show’s tone will stay the same. Shrinking mixes heavy emotional moments with sharp comedy. That balance is what made the show popular. Lawrence is not changing the formula. He is just giving the characters new situations to react to.
The full main cast returns. That includes Harrison Ford who has become a fan favorite as the grumpy but caring Dr. Paul Rhoades. Ford’s involvement in a streaming series was a big deal when the show started. Now he seems fully committed to the role.
Brett Goldstein, who co-created the show and also plays Louis (the drunk driver who caused Tia’s death), will likely return as well. His character’s story reached a major point in Season 3.
