The world of Westeros is growing again. Even before the first season of the new Game of Thrones prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, hits screens, its stars are sharing news about what comes next. Actor Peter Claffey, who plays the lead role of Ser Duncan the Tall, recently revealed that filming for Season 2 is about to begin. This exciting update comes alongside the release of the series’ final trailer, building major momentum for the show’s debut in early 2026.
What Is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms About?
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is the second official spinoff from the Game of Thrones franchise, following the successful House of the Dragon. The story is set roughly 100 years before the original series and follows two unlikely friends traveling across Westeros. Peter Claffey stars as Ser Duncan “Dunk” the Tall, a young, inexperienced but honorable hedge knight. His traveling companion and squire is Egg, played by Dexter Sol Ansell. Unbeknownst to Dunk, Egg is actually Prince Aegon Targaryen, hiding his royal identity.
The series is based on author George R.R. Martin’s collection of novellas called “Tales of Dunk and Egg.” Showrunner Ira Parker describes the show as a “lighter, more friendly path to Westeros,” focusing on the close bond between the two main characters before the darker, more dangerous elements of the world inevitably appear.
The Big Season 2 Announcement and Filming Start
During a fan panel at the CCXP convention in Sรฃo Paulo, Brazil, lead actor Peter Claffey made the exciting announcement. He told the audience, “On Tuesday, we start filming season two!”. This confirms that production on the next chapter of Dunk and Egg’s journey will begin very soon in Belfast, Ireland. The quick move to film Season 2 is supported by HBO’s strong confidence in the project; the network officially renewed the series for a second season in November 2025, two months before the first season’s premiere.
Season 1 is scheduled to debut on Saturday, January 18, 2026, on HBO and will be available to stream on Max. The second season is currently expected to be released in 2027.
New Story Location and Character Connections
The actors also teased where the story will go in the upcoming season. Claffey and Ansell confirmed that Season 2 will feature Dorne, the southernmost kingdom of Westeros. This region was a notable and sometimes controversial part of the original Game of Thrones storyline, and its inclusion suggests the show will closely follow the plot of Martin’s second Dunk and Egg novella, The Sworn Sword.
Claffey also discussed a special link between his character and the original series. He confirmed that Ser Duncan the Tall is a direct ancestor of Brienne of Tarth, the warrior knight played by Gwendoline Christie in Game of Thrones.
“I loved Gwendoline Christie as Brienne,” Claffey said. “There’s a lot of aspects to Dunk’s character that she shares.”
A Look at the Cast and Behind-the-Scenes Stories
The main cast includes Finn Bennett as Prince Aerion “Brightflame” Targaryen, Egg’s dangerous older brother. Other actors like Bertie Carvel and Daniel Ings will also appear.
The two leads, Claffey and Ansell, developed a strong friendship off-screen that mirrors their characters’ bond. Ansell shared that they spent weekends together, “having Five Guys and having burgers and going to the arcade.” Claffey joked about their downtime, saying, “I like to unwind on the weekend by kicking Dexter’s ass in Mario Kart.”
Ansell, who was only nine years old when filming began, also talked about the physical transformation for his role. He had to shave his head completely to play Egg, a change he embraced. “Showers are a lot quicker,” he noted.

What the Final Trailer Shows
The new final trailer for Season 1 debuted at the CCXP panel. It highlights Dunk’s efforts to prove himself as a knight in a tournament, hoping to earn a place in House Targaryen. George R.R. Martin expressed his specific vision for these scenes, telling the show’s writers he wanted “the best jousting sequences that were ever done on film.”
Showrunner Ira Parker emphasized that the show’s perspective is tightly focused on Dunk’s experience. The goal was to make the audience feel the grit and challenge of his life. “We kept flooding this field with mud and dirtโฆ We’re going to feel every grit of that,” Parker said.
With a premiere date set, a final trailer released, and filming for the next season already starting, the journey of Dunk and Egg is one of the most certain and upcoming additions to the world of Game of Thrones.
