The latest episode of Chicago Med brought a familiar face from the Marvel universe to Gaffney Medical Center. Elden Henson, best known for playing Foggy Nelson in Daredevil, appeared as Lucas Charles, the late father of Dr. Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt) in season 11 episode 17, titled “Altered States.”

The episode aired on April 8, 2026, on NBC. It followed Dr. Charles as he fought for his life after suffering a severe stroke. While unconscious, he experienced a dream-like state where he confronted deep emotional wounds from his past, including the death of his father.

A Powerful Scene Between Father and Son

The scene where Dr. Charles meets his father carries heavy emotional weight. Lucas Charles passed away from suicide when Daniel was young. The young Daniel found his father’s body in the garage after he died from exhaust fumes in his car. This moment shaped Dr. Charles’ entire life and career choice.

In the dream sequence, Dr. Charles becomes his younger self again. He follows a strange mist into the garage, which turns out to be car exhaust. Inside, he finds his father alive in the running car. He breaks the window and saves him. The two then share an honest talk about mental health and family struggles.

“His father reminded him that his death was not his fault, he couldn’t have stopped him, and that he loves Charles.” – One Chicago Center report on episode 17

But the relief does not last. The garage door closes again. Lucas starts the car and asks his son to join him on the other side. Dr. Charles fights to escape as the car fills with deadly fumes. He eventually wakes up after doctors successfully complete his surgery.

Elden Henson’s Journey From Daredevil to Chicago Med

Elden Henson has built a solid career in both television and film over the past three decades. His most famous role remains Franklin “Foggy” Nelson, the best friend and law partner of Matt Murdock in Daredevil. He played this character in all three seasons of the Netflix series. He also appeared as Foggy in Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and The Defenders.

When Marvel Studios brought Daredevil back with Daredevil: Born Again, Henson returned to reprise his role. His character appeared in a limited capacity before leaving the series.

Before his Marvel fame, Henson played Fulton Reed in The Mighty Ducks movie franchise. He later returned for the Disney+ series The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers. His television work includes guest roles on popular shows like Criminal Minds, Grey’s Anatomy, ER, and Workaholics.

Other Guest Stars in Episode 17

Henson was not the only familiar face in “Altered States.” Brenda Strong returned as Dr. Suzie Mankiewicz. She is Dr. Charles’ old friend from medical school. Strong is known for her roles in Desperate Housewives, Supergirl, and Dallas.

Dr. Mankiewicz first appeared earlier in season 11, episode 11, “Our So Called Lives.” In that episode, her character died during surgery. Her return in episode 17 as part of Charles’ dream made the reunion more emotional for viewers.

Dr. Charles Survives But Faces Big Changes

Oliver Platt, who plays Dr. Charles, spoke with TVLine about the intense episode. He admitted he was relieved his character survived.

“I was just deeply relieved that I survived this.” – Oliver Platt to TVLine

The showrunner, Allen MacDonald, explained that this medical crisis will change Dr. Charles going forward. The experience helps him see his life more clearly. He decides quickly that he wants to stay at Gaffney and continue his work.

But challenges still wait for him. MacDonald noted that Dr. Theo Rabari, played by Manish Dayal, remains a threat to Charles’ position at the hospital.
