After voicing the tragic villain Powerplex in the third season of Amazon Prime Video’s Invincible, actor Aaron Paul has announced he will not return for the upcoming fourth season. The Breaking Bad star explained that the emotional intensity of the role was too difficult for him to continue.
The actor revealed his decision during a recent interview, stating that while he is a fan of the show, putting himself in the mindset of his character was too grueling on his mental state.
Why Aaron Paul Stepped Away
Aaron Paul was the voice of Powerplex, also known as Scott Duvall, in Invincible Season 3. The character is a grieving man who blames Mark Grayson for the deaths of his sister and niece. His quest for revenge leads to even more personal tragedy, resulting in the deaths of his own wife and son.
During an appearance on the Kinda Funny Gamescast, Paul explained his reasons for leaving the popular animated series. He expressed great respect for the show and its team but stated that the role negatively impacted him.
“They asked me to come back for the next season, but I gotta tell you, that show Iโm such a fan of, I watch every episode, I love it. But it was just way too grueling on my psyche,” Paul said. He added, “I put myself in that skin, and it was a skin I didn’t feel comfortable in, to be honest.”
Paul emphasized that his departure was not due to any problems with the production team, noting that “everyone involved in that camp is amazing.” His decision was solely based on the emotional toll of voicing such a tormented character.
The Future of Powerplex
With Paul’s exit, the show must now recast the role of Powerplex for Season 4. In Robert Kirkman’s original comic books, the character of Scott Duvall has more story left to tell. After his defeat, he attempts redemption as part of a C-list superhero team called The Actioneers.
His story arc continues as he later escapes from prison, confronts Invincible again, and ultimately meets his end when his powers overload. Based on the timeline of the comics and Paul’s comments, this storyline is expected to be adapted in Season 4, which is scheduled to premiere in March 2026.
This is not the first time Invincible has recast a major character. Previously, the role of D.A. Sinclair was recast from Ezra Miller to Eric Bauza for the second season. The voice of Titan was also changed from Mahershala Ali to Todd Williams.

A Tragic Character
Powerplex stands out in Invincible as one of the most tragic antagonists Mark Grayson has faced. Unlike universe-ending threats, he is an ordinary person broken by grief. His family was accidentally killed during one of Invincible’s battles, making his desire for revenge understandable, even if his methods are villainous.
This grounded, human pain made the character particularly compelling and, for Aaron Paul, particularly difficult to perform. His performance required channeling immense emotional turmoil, which the actor described as something he “didn’t like” and the reason he “couldn’t continue.”
What’s Next for Invincible
Season 4 of Invincible is already generating excitement among fans. The new season will see the introduction of the powerful Viltrumite leader Thragg, who will be voiced by Lee Pace. Actor Matthew Rhys has also joined the cast in an undisclosed role.
The upcoming season is set to begin around issue #65 of the comic series and will focus on the much-anticipated Viltrumite War storyline. Voice recording for the new season has already been completed. The show has also been officially renewed for a fifth season, with creator Robert Kirkman estimating it will take around eight or nine seasons to fully adapt the entire comic book series.
