Ahn Hyo Seop, the South Korean actor known for his roles in popular dramas, has recently gained global attention for his voice acting work in Netflix’s animated film ‘KPop Demon Hunters’. The movie premiered on June 20, 2025, and quickly became a worldwide sensation, topping Netflix’s Top 10 charts in 41 countries.

In a recent interview, Ahn shared his experience working on the project, his thoughts on the film’s success, and the emotional depth of his character, Jinwoo, a demonic K-pop idol with a tragic past.

Ahn Hyo Seop’s Journey Into Voice Acting

Ahn Hyo Seop took on the role of Jinwoo, the leader of the fictional boy group Saja Boys, who secretly harvest human souls for the demon king Gwi-Ma. This marked Ahn’s first major voice-acting role in an animated film.

“I’ve always been curious about voice acting, and I wanted to give something back to my international fans,” Ahn said. “When I received a letter from director Maggie Kang, I was touched by her warm words and deep affection for the project. Her sincerity made me want to be a part of it.”

The recording process was unique due to the remote collaboration between Ahn in South Korea and the production team in the United States.

“We set up a camera next to the microphone to capture my facial expressions and movements. These reference videos were used to help bring Jinwoo’s emotions and actions to life. I think that connection helped the character feel more real.”

The Challenges and Rewards of Animation

Ahn admitted that voice acting for animation was a new challenge. Directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans guided him through the process, encouraging him to experiment with different tones and delivery styles.

“Animation was a new and unfamiliar format for me, so there were some challenges. But both directors guided me with care and detail, which helped me adjust quickly. They encouraged me to explore different tones, speeds, and rhythms for the same lines. I really appreciated the freedom they gave me to experiment and express myself.”

He also reflected on the emotional complexity of his character.

“I think Jinwoo’s inner demon was born from guilt and regret, caused by decisions he couldn’t avoid. Facing your inner darkness is never easy, but it is something everyone goes through. Jinwoo eventually confronts that pain and grows stronger because of it.”

The Global Success of ‘KPop Demon Hunters’

The film blends K-pop, fantasy, and Korean mythology, following the girl group HUNTR/X, who are both global idols and demon hunters. The soundtrack, featuring original songs and covers by real K-pop artists, has also gained massive popularity.

Ahn shared his reaction to seeing the final film.

“My heart was full. Even when reading the script, I couldn’t fully imagine how it would all come together. But the final version far exceeded my expectations. It was so beautiful and moving. Every scene felt like a dream.”

He highlighted what sets ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ apart from other animated films.

“I think the biggest difference is how central emotion is to the story. In many animations, music stays in the background. But in this film, music, story, and emotions are all connected. It feels more like a live performance or a movie with a powerful stage presence.”

The Film’s Message of Self-Acceptance

One of the film’s key themes is overcoming self-doubt and embracing one’s true self. Ahn hopes viewers take away an important message from the story.

“Everyone has a shadow inside them, and sometimes it takes courage to face it. I hope this film encourages people to accept that part of themselves. In the end, Rumi finds her voice and strength, and I hope many viewers find comfort and courage through her journey.”
