Actor Ahn Hyo Seop recently shared exciting details about his experience working on the hit Netflix animated film K-Pop Demon Hunters. The movie became a global sensation after its release on June 20, 2025, topping Netflix charts in 41 countries and earning praise for its unique mix of K-pop, fantasy, and Korean mythology.

Ahn Hyo Seop voiced Jinu, the leader of the fictional boy group Saja Boys, who are secretly demons hunting human souls. This was his first time doing English voice acting, and he opened up about the challenges and fun moments during recording.

How Ahn Hyo Seop Became Part Of K-Pop Demon Hunters

Ahn Hyo Seop joined the project after receiving a heartfelt letter from director Maggie Kang. She explained her vision for the film and expressed her strong belief that he was perfect for the role of Jinu.

“I’ve always been curious about voice acting. I also really wanted to give something back to fans overseas who have shown me so much love. Director Maggie Kangโ€™s sincerity resonated with me, and I naturally felt drawn to be part of it.”

The film blends K-pop with fantasy, following the girl group Huntr/x, who are both idols and demon hunters. The Saja Boys, led by Jinu, appear as rivals but hide a dark secret.

The Unique Recording Process

Since the production team was in the U.S. and Ahn Hyo Seop was in Korea, all recordings were done remotely via video calls. What made this process special was that his facial expressions and movements were also filmed to help animate Jinuโ€™s character.

“We filmed not only my voice but also my facial expressions and movements together. The recorded reference video was used to create Jinuโ€™s expressions and emotions. It was more than just voice actingโ€”my body and expressions were part of the character.”

He admitted feeling nervous since it was his first time acting in English. However, the directors, Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, guided him patiently, allowing him to experiment with different tones and emotions for each line.

Understanding Jinuโ€™s Character

Jinu is a complex character who made a dangerous deal with the demon king Gwi-ma (voiced by Lee Byung-hun) to protect his family. This choice trapped him in darkness, but he still holds warmth and curiosity about humanity.

“Jinuโ€™s inner demon comes from guilt and pain from choices he couldnโ€™t avoid. Facing that darkness is never easy, but itโ€™s something we all go through. He grows stronger by confronting it.”

Ahn Hyo Seop found the role emotionally challenging but rewarding. He was amazed by how the final animation brought Jinu to life in ways he couldnโ€™t imagine while recording.

The Global Success Of K-Pop Demon Hunters

The film broke records by ranking No. 1 in 41 countries, including the U.S., U.K., and Australia, within a day of its Netflix release. The soundtrack also performed well, peaking at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 chart.

Ahn Hyo Seop expressed his joy at the filmโ€™s success, saying it was a dream come true to be part of such a groundbreaking project. He hopes the movie encourages people to face their inner struggles with courage.

“I hope this film reminds people that everyone has darkness inside, and sometimes the bravest thing is to face it. Itโ€™s about finding strength in your own voice.”
