The 1988 martial arts classic that turned Jean-Claude Van Damme into a star is coming back. A24, the studio behind acclaimed films like Everything Everywhere All At Once, is teaming up with award-winning creator Michaela Coel to reimagine Bloodsport for a new generation. Coel will write and direct the project, marking a surprising but intriguing shift for the action franchise.
A Surprising Creative Partnership For The Cult Classic
Nearly 40 years after its original release, Bloodsport remains a beloved piece of action movie history. The original film followed Frank Dux (Van Damme), a U.S. Army captain who enters an illegal underground martial arts tournament called the Kumite in Hong Kong. Despite mixed reviews from critics, the movie became a massive box office success, earning $50 million worldwide on a budget of just over $2 million. It helped launch the martial arts film resurgence in America during the late 1980s.
Now, A24 is backing a new version with Michaela Coel at the helm. Coel is best known for creating and starring in the Emmy-winning HBO series I May Destroy You, as well as the British sitcom Chewing Gum. She has also appeared in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and the Black Mirror episode “USS Callister.” This project marks her third collaboration with A24, following the upcoming miniseries First Day on Earth and the film Mother Mary, which stars Anne Hathaway and is scheduled for release on April 17.
In a statement released alongside the announcement, Coel shared her excitement about stepping into the world of martial arts competition.
“I have long been in awe of fighters, and astounded by the discipline, intensity and isolation the sport demands of them. I am excited to explore this world, especially so with A24 as my collaborators. LET’S F*CKING GO.”
What We Know About The New Bloodsport
Plot details for the reimagining remain under wraps, so it is unclear how closely Coel’s version will follow the original storyline. The 1988 film was marketed as a true story based on the life of martial artist Frank Dux, though those claims were later disputed. Co-writer Sheldon Lettich has stated that Dux fabricated many of the tales about his fighting record and the Kumite tournament itself. Van Damme also revealed in a 2019 interview that he personally oversaw a new cut of the original film because the first version was unwatchable.

Marc Toberoff is producing the new Bloodsport, with Alberto Lensi also serving as a producer. Stuart Manashil and Peggy DiSalle will act as executive producers. Toberoff highlighted the original film’s influence on the action genre and his vision for bringing it back.
“In 1988, the now-iconic ‘Bloodsport’ introduced audiences to the gritty aesthetic of mixed martial arts,” Toberoff said. “I look forward to bringing back that high-energy tournament format to the big screen again.”
How Fans Are Reacting To The News
The announcement has generated significant discussion among action movie fans. Many have taken to online forums to share their thoughts on the unexpected pairing of A24’s arthouse sensibility with a classic martial arts property.
On the Sherdog MMA forum, one user expressed skepticism, writing, “Sounds like an absolutely terrible idea. Will probably be complete trash… will still watch.” Another user joked about casting, suggesting action stars like Scott Adkins and Michael Jai White should be involved. Some fans questioned whether a modern remake could capture the specific energy of the original, with one commenter noting, “There is also no modern equivalent to Van Damme really.”
Others are more curious about how Coel will approach the material given her background in character-driven dramas. The original Bloodsport currently holds a 48% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes but a much higher 75% audience score, reflecting its enduring popularity with viewers despite critical dismissal at the time.
The original Bloodsport is currently available to watch on premium video-on-demand services like Amazon Video and Apple TV Store in the United States. In other regions, the film is available through services like MGM+ on Prime Video.
