CBS has officially announced Boston Blue, a new spin-off from the popular police drama Blue Bloods. The show will premiere on October 17, 2025, at 10 p.m. ET, taking over the time slot previously held by the original series. Donnie Wahlberg returns as Danny Reagan, but this time heโs leaving New York for a new job with the Boston Police Department.
The spin-off introduces a fresh cast while keeping the Reagan family legacy alive. Sonequa Martin-Green joins as Detective Lena Silver, Dannyโs new partner from a powerful Boston law enforcement family. Other key cast members include Gloria Reuben as District Attorney Mae Silver, Maggie Lawson as Police Superintendent Sarah Silver, Marcus Scribner as rookie cop Jonah Silver, and Ernie Hudson as Reverend Peters, the familyโs patriarch.
Danny Reaganโs New Journey In Boston
Boston Blue follows Danny Reagan as he starts a new chapter in Boston, leaving behind his long-time role with the NYPD. The series explores his partnership with Lena Silver, a high-ranking detective from a well-connected family. The show will dive into police investigations, moral dilemmas, and the challenges of working in a new city.
One major change is the recasting of Sean Reagan, Dannyโs youngest son. Mika Amonsen takes over the role from Andrew Terraciano, who played Sean for 14 seasons on Blue Bloods. In the spin-off, Sean is now a Boston PD patrolman, giving the father-son duo a chance to rebuild their relationship in a new setting.
“Tune in,” Wahlberg teased on Instagram when fans asked if more Reagan family members might appear. “Who said he is [leaving his family]?”
New Cast And Returning Faces
While Donnie Wahlberg is the only confirmed returning star from Blue Bloods, fans hope for cameos from original cast members like Tom Selleck (Frank Reagan) and Marisa Ramirez (Maria Baez). The showโs producers have hinted that guest appearances are possible, given the close distance between New York and Boston.
The Silver family will play a central role, mirroring the Reagan family dynamics from the original series. Ernie Hudsonโs character, Reverend Peters, serves as the moral backbone, similar to Len Cariouโs Henry Reagan in Blue Bloods.
Production And Release Details
Boston Blue is developed by Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis, the writers behind The Blacklist and The Enemy Within. The pilot episode is directed by Anthony Hemingway, known for his work on American Crime Story.
The series will film partially in Boston but primarily in Toronto, Canada. Episodes will air weekly on CBS and stream the next day on Paramount+.
What To Expect From The Spin-Off
The show promises the same police procedural drama and family themes that made Blue Bloods a hit. However, it introduces new conflicts, including department politics in Boston and Danny adjusting to life away from his New York roots.
“Itโs a strategic continuation of a beloved franchise,” said a CBS spokesperson. *”Weโre keeping the spirit of *Blue Bloods* while exploring fresh stories in a new city.”*
