The latest episode of CBS’s Boston Blue saw a murder investigation expose painful secrets for both a grieving family and the detectives working the case. In season 1, episode 8, titled “In the Name of the Father, And of the Sonโ€ฆ,” a planned robbery ended with a young father dead, pulling Detectives Danny Reagan and Lena Silver into a story of betrayal while old family tensions boiled over at home. The episode aired on CBS on Friday, December 12, 2025 at 10 p.m. ET.

The Case: A Robbery That Wasn’t Random

Danny and Lena’s investigation began at a brutal crime scene: a husband and father was shot and killed during a robbery while his wife, Evelyn, and their young son watched. What initially appeared to be a random act of violence quickly unraveled into something far more calculated. Evidence showed the killer had been watching the family’s home, indicating the crime was planned.

The trail first led to Gary Ross, a man involved in an auto theft ring, who identified the shooter as Thomas Baldwin, a man with a record for aggravated robbery. The case took a sharp turn when the victim’s own father revealed a critical connection: Baldwin was Evelyn’s former boyfriend. Phone records showed Evelyn had been in frequent contact with Baldwin, and her story about her family’s movements on the night of the murder began to fall apart.

For Danny, played by Donnie Wahlberg, the case became deeply personal. His conversations with the victim’s grieving father clearly affected him, driving his determination to find the truth. The final pieces revealed a painful reality: Evelyn had conspired with her ex-boyfriend, setting up her own husband to be killed.

Lena Tests Professional and Family Boundaries

As evidence mounted, Lena’s determination to make an arrest clashed with her mother’s professional caution. Mae Silver, Boston’s District Attorney and Lena’s mother, refused to sign off on arrest warrants, insisting on more solid proof. This highlighted the complex, often strained dynamic between them, with Lena feeling held to an impossibly high standard.

To move the case forward, Lena devised a bold plan. She enlisted the help of her grandfather, Reverend Edwin Peters, to speak with the guilt-ridden Evelyn. His faith-based approach succeeded where police interrogation did not, leading Evelyn to confess her role in the crime. Her visible grief at the crime scene was not just for her husband, but overwhelming regret for her own actions.

This emotional breakthrough was mirrored by a revelation within Lena’s own family. In a bid to help Evelyn unburden herself, Reverend Edwin shared a long-kept family secret with her: Mae’s mother did not die in a car accident as Mae believed, but instead took her own life. This bombshell, unknown to Mae herself, added a profound new layer to the family’s history.

Family Tensions Spill Over at a Volatile Dinner

While Danny and Lena worked the case, other family members faced their own conflicts. Rookie cops Sean Reagan and Jonah Silver arrested a Boston fire captain for drunk driving after he crashed his vehicle and assaulted Sean. Despite clear evidence, they faced immediate pressure from their own captain to drop the charges to avoid a political dispute with the fire department.

Jonah’s decision to stand up to a cop who was bullying him and Sean was one of the best moments, noted one review, highlighting a shift for the duo away from purely comedic storylines.

Their sister, police superintendent Sarah Silver, stepped in. Rather than push for jail time, she advocated for the fire captain to enter rehab, addressing the root of the problem while still ensuring accountability. This subplot dovetailed with Sarah’s own home life, where she clashed with her boyfriend, Seth, over how to discipline his teenage daughter, connecting personal fears to professional decisions.

These tensions came to a head during a family dinner, where hidden secrets and professional frustrations threatened to surface. The episode also reminded viewers of a looming threat: the recent arrest of a corrupt Assistant District Attorney could reopen old cases, potentially allowing the man who killed the Silver family’s father to walk free.
