The 2024 Melon Music Awards (MMA) have ignited controversy after SUGA, a member of BTS, was excluded from a VCR segment celebrating the group’s legacy. The decision has left fans outraged, with many accusing the organizers of disrespecting the artist.
Fans Spot SUGA’s Absence
The awards ceremony, held on November 30 at the INSPIRE Arena in Seoul, included a special VCR showcasing BTS’s history of accolades at the MMAs. However, viewers quickly noticed that SUGA had been edited out of the clips, portraying BTS as a six-member group. This omission led to an outpouring of anger from fans, who flooded social media platforms, especially X (formerly Twitter), with hashtags like “BTS is Seven.”
“What did SUGA do to deserve this disrespect?”
“How could MMA even present this segment? BTS is incomplete without all seven members.”
Possible Connection to Past Controversy
Speculation suggests that SUGA’s exclusion might be linked to his DUI incident earlier this year. In August, SUGA was involved in a drunk-driving case on an electric scooter, with reports alleging his blood alcohol level was 0.227%, significantly above South Korea’s legal limit. Despite resolving the issue through a summary indictment and paying a 15 million KRW fine, the incident drew intense public scrutiny.
During the controversy, anti-fans even sent funeral wreaths to his agency. Still, ARMYs rallied around the rapper, questioning why his actions attracted disproportionate criticism compared to other public figures.
No Official Response Yet
As of now, neither the MMA organizers nor BIGHIT MUSIC have addressed the controversy. Fans continue to demand accountability, arguing that SUGA’s past mistakes should not overshadow his contributions to BTS’s legacy.
Fans Stand Firm: “BTS is Seven”
Despite the backlash, fans remain steadfast in their support for SUGA, emphasizing the unity of BTS as a seven-member group. Many hope the situation prompts a response from the MMA team or the agency.
What are your thoughts on SUGA’s exclusion? Should his past controversy affect how his legacy is honored?
