BTS member SUGA, performing under his Agust D moniker, has achieved a significant milestone, becoming the most consumed Asian act across digital platforms worldwide. This remarkable feat comes in the wake of an ongoing DUI incident, where the global BTS fandom, known as ARMYs, has shown unwavering support for the artist.
Following the news of the incident, which occurred on August 6 in the Hannam-dong area of Seoul, SUGA’s music saw a substantial resurgence in popularity. His alter ego, Agust D, experienced a surge in streaming and downloads as fans rallied behind him. Tracks such as Snooze and Nevermind became widely popular, with fans quoting lyrics on social media and leading to a resurgence of his music on various charts.
Agust D’s Global Chart Domination
After SUGA’s initial appearance for investigation on August 23, his track Polar Night, under the Agust D moniker, reached the #1 position on the Worldwide iTunes Song chart. This marks the first time the song achieved this peak, a year after its original release. Throughout the night, the entire D-DAY album saw its tracks re-entering the charts, with Snooze, Haegeum, The Last, and others gaining significant traction.
“Over the night, Agust D became the only act with the most songs (five) charting at #1 on iTunes Country Charts worldwide.”
As of the morning of August 24, the 2016 track The Last reached #1 on iTunes in the U.S. for the first time, over eight years after its release. Currently, Agust D’s tracks hold the #1 spot on iTunes in 58 countries, with Polar Night leading in 40 of them.
ARMYs’ Support Amid Legal Scrutiny
The strong performance of Agust D’s music underscores the global support SUGA is receiving from his fans during this challenging period. With this achievement, SUGA joins fellow BTS members Jimin, Jungkook, and V as the only K-pop acts to reach #1 on U.S. iTunes in 2024.
“ARMYs have shown immense love and support for SUGA, helping his music soar to new heights despite the ongoing challenges.”
The DUI incident that sparked this rally occurred on August 6, when SUGA, after an evening out with friends, was involved in an accident while riding an electric scooter near his apartment in Hannam-dong. His blood alcohol level was reportedly 0.227%, well above the legal limit of 0.08%, leading to legal scrutiny. The situation was further complicated by conflicting media reports, though a major Korean outlet later issued an apology after CCTV footage clarified the events. Both BIGHIT MUSIC and SUGA issued sincere apologies shortly after the news broke on August 7.
