The April 1 episode of Chicago Fire Season 14 Episode 16 brought major changes to Firehouse 51. Titled “Firehouse 66,” the episode introduced a tough new Battalion Chief while several main characters were absent. The episode aired on NBC on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Viewers in the USA watched live on NBC, while UK fans can stream on Sky Witness and Now TV. Canadian audiences catch new episodes on Citytv, and Australian viewers can watch on 9Now. Indian fans can stream on Peacock and JioCinema.

The episode centered on Lieutenant Kelly Severide dealing with a new boss who has a personal problem with him. Meanwhile, Joe Cruz faced a family situation involving his adopted son Javi. The hour was different from usual because many regular cast members were missing, making it a focused story about the Squad team.

Rob Morgan Joins as Battalion Chief Hopkins

Rob Morgan, known for his roles in Stranger Things and Mudbound, made his first appearance as Battalion Chief Hopkins. He steps in to temporarily replace Dermot Mulroney’s character Chief Dom Pascal, who took a break from the show after episode 14.

Hopkins arrives at Firehouse 51 and immediately takes charge. He claims Pascal’s office and starts questioning Severide about working the same shifts as his wife Stella Kidd. The new chief points out that married couples working together goes against CFD rules, even though Severide and Kidd had received special permission before. Hopkins warns that he plans to change this arrangement.

“Hopkins announces that he is going to stay at Firehouse 51 and use his position to kick legacy firefighters (like Severide) out of the system.”

The tension grows when Severide looks into Hopkins’ past. He finds out that Hopkins served with Severide’s father Benny at Firehouse 66. Benny had suspended Hopkins without any reason years ago, and Hopkins still holds a grudge. Severide learns that Hopkins believes he only moved up in the department because of his father’s connections. Hopkins plans to clean house and remove firefighters like Severide from the CFD.

Rob Morgan will appear in four episodes, including the Season 14 finale. His character brings a new level of conflict to Firehouse 51, setting up a fight with Severide that will play out over several weeks.

Taylor Kinney Leads as Kelly Severide

Taylor Kinney returns as Lieutenant Kelly Severide, carrying most of this episode’s weight. Severide starts the hour with good news. He passed his Captain’s exam in the number one position. But Chief Hopkins’ arrival overshadows this achievement.

Severide discovers that Hopkins worked with his father, which explains why the new chief treats him so harshly. When Severide confronts Hopkins, the chief makes it clear he thinks Severide only succeeded because of Benny’s name. The episode ends with Severide visiting Captain Tom Van Meter at his home, promising to fight back against Hopkins to protect his Firehouse 51 family.

Kinney’s performance carried the episode, showing Severide’s determination to prove himself without his father’s shadow.

Joe Minoso’s Cruz Faces Family Decisions

Joe Minoso plays Firefighter Joe Cruz, who has a major personal storyline in this episode. Cruz and his wife Chloe are expecting another baby. While Cruz is happy, he also feels scared about the added responsibility.

The situation gets more complicated when Chloe tells Cruz that their adopted son Javi asked his social worker to find family members in Honduras. Chloe worries that Javi feels disconnected because of the new baby. But Javi later explains that he asked about his birth family months ago, before Chloe was pregnant.

Severide helps Cruz by connecting him to their social worker Terry. Terry advises Cruz to be honest with Javi and explains that adopted children often want to learn about their roots. This leads Cruz to book a trip to Honduras with Javi so they can explore his hometown together.

Tim Hopper Returns as Captain Van Meter

Tim Hopper appears as Captain Tom Van Meter, who is recovering from the fire that put him in a coma. Van Meter and Severide discuss the new chief, and Van Meter suspects Hopkins’ arrival at Firehouse 51 is not random. He believes Hopkins has a hidden reason for being there, which turns out to be correct.
