In the year 2025, huge beasts from beyond the galaxy attacked Earth. In the war that followed, humanity fought back with a giant robot named Yukio, piloted by Tetsuo Yabusame. As the massive alien swarm closed in on humanity’s homeworld, Tetsuo and the Earth Defense Force deployed for the final battle with the invading horde. They lostโ€ฆ Yukio was destroyed in battle and Tetsuo survived in an escape pod. After eight years in cold sleep, the escape pod finally lands back on Earth. But when Tetsuo emerges he finds a world in ruins, entirely frozen beneath a blanket of ice and snowโ€”Snowball Earth!

The main character, Tetsuo Yabusame, is described as an extremely shy boy who had no friends except his robot partner, Yukio. After waking up, he finds a world that is completely different from the one he left. The series follows him as he tries to figure out what happened to humanity and keep the last promise he made to Yukio.

The original manga creator, Yuhiro Tsujitsugu, even drew a special illustration to celebrate the announcement of the ending theme.

Where Does the Story Begin?

The first episode of Snowball Earth will start with the final battle against the galactic monsters. Viewers will see Tetsuo and Yukio in action before Tetsuo enters his eight-year cold sleep. The story then jumps forward to show the frozen world he wakes up in and introduces the new characters he will meet along the way.

The official teaser trailer, which was released in March 2026, showed scenes of the frozen Earth and the monsters that now roam its surface. It also gave a look at Tetsuoโ€™s struggle to adjust to his new reality and his attempts to connect with the survivors he finds.

What to Expect from the Premiere

Snowball Earth brings together several elements that anime fans enjoy: mecha action, post-apocalyptic settings, and a character-driven story. The team behind the music previously worked on Dr. Stone, which had a similarly grand and emotional score. The directorโ€™s past work on action-heavy shows suggests that the robot and monster fights will be a highlight.

The first episode will likely cover the opening chapters of the manga, introducing the world and setting up the main conflict. It will show Tetsuoโ€™s awakening, his first encounters with the survivors of the frozen world, and the beginning of his search for answers about what happened to Earth and to Yukio.
