The latest episode of Chicago Fire Season 14 brought serious trouble to Firehouse 51. Episode 17, titled “Sway,” aired on April 8, 2026, and showed the team dealing with a terrible fire at a surgery center. The episode also introduced new problems with a tough new chief who seems to have a personal issue with Kelly Severide.
Here is a simple breakdown of who played which character in this episode and what happened to their roles during the intense hour.
Chief Hopkins Arrives and Targets Severide
The biggest change in this episode involves the new boss. Dermot Mulroney plays Chief Dom Pascal, but he was not the one causing the drama this time. The episode introduced Chief Hopkins, a new superior who came to Firehouse 51 looking for trouble.
Hopkins immediately focused on Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney). He accused Severide of neglecting his duties because Severide has been working many side cases with the Office of Fire Investigation (OFI). The new chief even filed a formal complaint with internal affairs. The charge was “dereliction of duty.” This puts Severide in a very dangerous position with his job, even though he was away at Captain’s training during this episode.
Severide was not present for most of the episode, but his shadow loomed large over every scene. The chief’s dislike for Severide actually became an unexpected opportunity for his wife, Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo). Hopkins tried to dismiss Stella as just “Severide’s wife,” but he was forced to watch her lead the team effectively without her husband.
Stella Kidd Takes Charge of the Investigation
Miranda Rae Mayo as Lieutenant Stella Kidd had a heavy workload in Episode 17. The main emergency of the night involved a devastating fire at a local surgery center. Kidd took personal charge of finding out what started the fire.
The episode highlighted how Kidd handled the pressure of the new chief watching her every move. She proved that Truck 81 runs just as smoothly with her in command. At one point, the chief allowed her to investigate the scene alone, something the previous chief, Pascal, rarely permitted.
Kidd tried to defend her husband to the new chief. She mentioned that Severide taught her everything she knows about fire investigation. Unfortunately, this backfired. Instead of impressing Hopkins, it only gave him more reasons to look into Severide’s history with OFI.
Violet, Novak, and Vasquez Deal with Relationship Drama
While the fire at the surgery center kept the action going, a different kind of drama was happening at the firehouse. The younger members of the team spent the episode dealing with shifting relationships.
Hanako Greensmith returned as Paramedic Violet Mikami. She was joined by Jocelyn Hudon as Paramedic Lyla Novak and Brandon Larracuente as Firefighter Sal Vasquez. The episode teased a complicated love triangle involving these three characters.
Vasquez seemed to be struggling with feelings for both Violet and Novak. The episode showed the three of them trying to figure out their friendship as emotions started to change. Many viewers found this subplot frustrating because it distracted from the main firefighting action, but it added personal stakes for the younger cast members.
The Rest of Firehouse 51 Appears in Episode 17
Even though Taylor Kinney (Kelly Severide) was absent for most of the “Sway” episode, the rest of the regular cast appeared to keep the house running.
Joe Minoso played Joe Cruz, and Christian Stolte played Mouch. The episode also included David Eigenberg as Christopher Herrmann. Herrmann was busy organizing a special event at the bar. Molly’s hosted its first-ever trivia night, which provided a lighter moment in an otherwise tense episode.
Daniel Kyri appeared as Darren Ritter. The episode also featured the recurring character Tony, who surprised everyone by knowing random facts during the trivia contest, proving he is the “secret weapon” of the house.

Fan Reactions to the Cast Dynamics
Fans had mixed feelings about the cast usage in Episode 17. Many viewers expressed disappointment that Taylor Kinney was barely in the episode, especially since the storyline directly involved his character’s career being in danger.
“The episode desperately needed Severide. The new chief storyline revolves around him, so having Stella handle it alone felt strange. We needed to see Kelly’s reaction.” – Fan reaction on social media
However, fans praised Miranda Rae Mayo for her performance as Stella Kidd. Viewers were happy to see the show finally treat her as a leader independent of her husband.
“Stella finally became ‘Lieutenant Kidd’ instead of just ‘Severide’s wife.’ Hopkins underestimated her, and she proved him wrong in every scene.” – Online discussion about the episode
