Chris Hemsworth recently shared his thoughts on playing Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) for 15 years. His emotional tribute video and comments have sparked rumors that the character might die in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday.
The actor posted a video titled “Thank You! The Legacy of Thor”, looking back at his journey from the first Thor movie in 2011 to Thor: Love and Thunder in 2022. The video includes behind-the-scenes clips, audition footage, and interviews with co-stars and directors.
In the video description, Hemsworth wrote:
“Playing Thor has been one of the greatest honors of my life. For the last 15 years I’ve held Mjolnir and then Stormbreaker as the God of Thunder, but what made it truly specialโฆ was sharing it with all of you. Your passion, your cheers, and your love for this character have meant everything to me. Thank you for making my journey through the Marvel Cinematic Universe unforgettableโฆ Next up, Doomsday!”
Fans quickly noticed the farewell-like tone, leading to speculation that Thor might be killed off in Avengers: Doomsday. Many took to social media to express their concerns.
“Please never walk away from this role. We all want you to stay,” one fan commented. Another wrote, “Oh yeah Thorโs definitely dying next movie.”
Hemsworth has played Thor in nine MCU films, making him one of the longest-running superhero actors. His portrayal evolved from a serious Norse god to a more humorous character, especially in Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder. However, he admitted that the last film didnโt meet his expectations.
“I got caught up in the improv and the wackiness, and I became a parody of myself. I didn’t stick the landing,” Hemsworth said in an interview with Vanity Fair. He added that he feels he owes fans another strong performance as Thor.
Avengers: Doomsday, directed by the Russo brothers, is set to release in December 2026. The film will bring back many MCU heroes, including Tom Hiddleston as Loki and Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. Rumors suggest the movie will feature major character deaths with no resurrections.
Meanwhile, discussions about Thor 5 are ongoing. Director George Miller (Mad Max: Fury Road) is reportedly in early talks to helm the project. If made, the film could take a darker tone, moving away from the comedy of Love and Thunder.
Hemsworthโs future as Thor remains uncertain. While he has hinted at closing the book on the character, he hasnโt ruled out returning if the story feels right. For now, fans will have to wait and see what happens in Avengers: Doomsday.
