Dakota Johnson is making headlines for her latest film Materialists, where she plays a matchmaker caught in a love triangle. The movie, directed by Celine Song, also stars Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal. Johnson recently shared why she was drawn to the complex character of Lucy and reflected on her early struggles in Hollywood.

Materialists follows Lucy, a matchmaker who finds herself torn between her ex-boyfriend (Chris Evans) and a new love interest (Pedro Pascal). The film explores themes of ambition, love, and identity. Johnson described Lucy as a “chameleon,” changing her personality depending on who she interacts with.

“After I read the script, I was immediately enticed by the layered inscrutability I saw in Lucy. I was drawn to the role because itโ€™s so complex. Lucy has so many different dynamics in the film, so thereโ€™s many different Lucys. Sheโ€™s a bit of a different person with every other character โ€” sheโ€™s sort of a chameleon in that way. And then youโ€™re wondering which of her is the truth, which I thought was just so fun to play with.”

The film is set to release in India on June 13 by Sony Pictures Entertainment. Fans are excited to see Johnson in another dramatic role after her performances in Fifty Shades of Grey and Madame Web.

Johnson also opened up about her early days in Hollywood, revealing that her father, actor Don Johnson, cut her off financially when she chose acting over college. She applied only to Juilliard but was rejected, leading her father to enforce his rule: no college, no financial support.

“I didn’t get in, and my dad cut me off because I didn’t go to college. So, I started auditioning. I think I was 19 when I did The Social Network, and then little jobs and stuff after that.”

Despite her famous parents, Johnson faced financial struggles early in her career. She admitted there were times she couldnโ€™t pay rent or buy groceries.

“For a couple of years, it was hard to make money. There were a few times when I’d go to the market and not have money in my bank account or not be able to pay rent, and I’d have to ask my parents for help.”

Her persistence paid off when she landed the lead role in Fifty Shades of Grey, which became a global hit. The trilogy earned over $1.3 billion worldwide, making Johnson a household name.

Don Johnson later joked about his decision to cut her off, saying she proved him wrong quickly.

“Three weeks later she had nailed down that part in David Fincher’s The Social Network, and the rest is, shall we say, cinema history.”

Now, Johnson continues to take on diverse roles, with Materialists being her latest project. Fans are eager to see her chemistry with Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal in the romantic drama.
