Apple TV+’s sci-fi thriller throws the Dessen family into a 1970s-style Chicago while Leighton’s grand plan for the Box comes into focus.
The second episode of Dark Matter Season 2, titled “A Perfect World,” continues the multiverse journey of Jason Dessen (Joel Edgerton), Daniela (Jennifer Connelly), and their son Charlie as they search for a safe place to call home. The episode aired on Apple TV+ on Friday, September 4, 2026. Running for 58 minutes, it picks up right after the Season 2 premiere and expands the story across three different groups of characters.
The Box’s Origin Story: Leighton’s Noble Beginning
The episode opens with a flashback set three years before the current events. Leighton Vance (Dayo Okeniyi), the CEO of Velocity Labs, celebrates the moment the Box becomes fully operational. He gives a speech to his team, including Jason2, Amanda Lucas (Alice Braga), and Blair (Amanda Brugel), about his vision for the technology.
“Through this door are worlds, worlds that have cured diseases that still ravage ours. Through these doors are worlds that have reversed climate change, saved species from extinction, crushed poverty. Through these doors are worlds that have ended war. We will visit these worlds. We will find the best technology, the brightest ideas. And we will bring them home.”
This moment shows that Leighton originally had good intentions. He wanted to use the Box to find solutions for humanity’s biggest problems. But viewers already know where this path leads. The flashback also shows Blair volunteering to be the first person to enter the Box, a decision that would later have serious consequences. Amanda warns Blair that she might not be mentally prepared for what awaits, but Blair sees it as her “Neil Armstrong moment”.
The Dessens Find a World Without Technology
Back in the present, Jason, Daniela, and Charlie continue their search for a safe world. They let Charlie choose the destination, and he leads them to a version of Chicago where history took a different turn. In this reality, John F. Kennedy lost the 1960 election to Richard Nixon, who then defunded NASA. Without the Space Race, the microprocessor was never developed. There are no computers, no cellphones, and no internet.
For the Dessens, this feels like a blessing. Without technology, they cannot be tracked. They decide to give this world a chance. Money is tight, so Jason and Daniela pawn their wedding rings to afford a hotel room. Charlie wants to go to school, but Daniela learns they need proper paperwork within 30 days. She also discovers that the Dessen family of this world lives in California, but a woman at the school recognizes her, proving they are not completely safe.
Jason gets a job and learns about a man who can help with documents. That man is Mitchel McNamara (Chris Diamantopoulos), a private investigator in this reality. Jason asks McNamara to look into his own family, which turns out to be a mistake. McNamara finds evidence of two Dessen families existing at the same time – one in San Francisco and one right in front of him. He doesn’t tell Jason what he found, but he is now suspicious.
Amanda and Ryan’s Journey
Meanwhile, Amanda and Ryan (Jimmi Simpson) continue their travels. Ryan wants to find Jason2 and make him pay for everything he did. Amanda initially plans to stay behind, but guilt over what happened to Blair makes her join Ryan. They travel to a world where they meet a version of Leighton who has been helping Ryan create the compound needed for the ampoules that allow dimensional travel.
This version of Leighton explains that he is on a mission to create the perfect world for himself. He is gathering different versions of himself from across realities and using their knowledge to build something entirely on his terms. Amanda decides they need to focus on understanding consciousness to make traveling between worlds easier and more natural.
In a surprising turn, Amanda and Ryan land in the exact same low-tech Chicago where the Dessens are hiding. They book a room at the same hotel, just a few doors away from Jason and his family. Neither group realizes how close they came to reuniting.
The Ending: McNamara Closes In
The episode ends with McNamara following the trail back to the Box. He watches as Amanda and Ryan step inside and vanish. He still doesn’t fully understand how the Box works, but he now knows that Jason’s impossible duplicate family is connected to it. His investigation is just beginning, and it could expose the Dessens before they are ready to leave.

“A Perfect World” does an excellent job of expanding the Dark Matter universe while keeping the focus on character-driven storytelling. The flashback to the Box’s creation adds important context to Leighton’s character. He is no longer just a villain; he is someone whose good intentions were corrupted by the very power he helped create.
The low-tech Chicago setting is a smart choice. It gives the Dessens a temporary sense of safety while also creating new problems. The lack of technology means they cannot easily gather information or communicate. The paperwork issue and the presence of their duplicates add layers of tension.
The near-miss between the Dessens and Amanda and Ryan is a clever narrative choice. It keeps the characters apart while reminding viewers that their paths are likely to cross again. McNamara’s investigation adds a new threat that feels different from the alternate Jasons the family has faced before. He is not a superpowered villain; he is just a curious man asking the right questions.
The episode balances multiple storylines without feeling overcrowded. Each group of characters has a clear goal, and their journeys feel connected even when they are in different realities. The show continues to explore big ideas about choice, consequence, and what it really means to find a perfect world.
