Following a dramatic season 2 finale, David Henrie is sharing exciting details about the planned story for a potential Wizards Beyond Waverly Place Season 3. While fans await an official renewal from Disney, the star and executive producer confirms the creators are actively developing the next chapter, which will explore major new themes and answer the biggest questions left by the cliffhanger.
The Season 2 Finale’s Major Reveals
The sophomore season of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place concluded with a two-part finale that delivered the most significant twist in the entire Wizards franchise. The story revealed that Selena Gomez’s character, Alex Russo, is actually the mother of young wizard trainee Billie, played by Janice LeAnn Brown.
The truth was hidden because Alex had used a memory-wiping spell on herself, Billie, and her brother Justin to protect her daughter. The emotional revelation was followed by a major sacrifice, with Alex jumping into a portal to the world of dark magic with the villainous wizard Lord Morsus to save her family. The season ended with Justin vowing to find his sister, leaving her fate unknown.
David Henrie described the finale as “the biggest cliffhanger the wizards universe has ever known.” The cast reported that the emotional script brought everyone to tears during the table read, including the studio executives.
The Planned Story for Season 3
In recent interviews, David Henrie has outlined the core themes and storylines that a third season would explore. He stated that the new season would directly address the profound questions raised by the finale’s events.
“In Season 3, we are really going to lean into the questions of identity, belonging, legacy, universal questions that will really come to the forefront at the end of the season, which I can’t wait for people to see,” Henrie told Deadline.
A central mystery will be uncovering Alex’s past. Henrie teased that a key detail in the finale—Alex wearing a wedding ring in a flashback—opens the door to major new plotlines.
“Who was her husband? Who is Billie’s father?” Henrie said. “A big thing for us is: Who was her husband? Who is Billie’s father?… There’s a lot there to play with that provokes these bigger questions around identity, legacy, [and] belonging for Billie and for all the Russos.”
He explained that the story would “retrace Alex’s footsteps,” focusing on a love story from her past that everyone has now forgotten. This exploration will likely provide organic opportunities for other beloved characters from the original Wizards of Waverly Place series to return.
Despite Alex’s apparent disappearance, Henrie assured that her character will continue to impact the narrative. He expressed excitement about exploring the overarching lore of the show, which is deeply connected to Selena Gomez’s character.
Renewal Status and Fan Expectations
As of now, Disney has not officially announced the renewal of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place for a third season. However, the massive cliffhanger and the show’s popularity make a continuation highly likely.
The show has followed a yearly release schedule, with its first season arriving in October 2024 and the second season premiering in September 2025. If the pattern continues, a potential third season could be expected in the fall of 2026.
Henrie has taken to social media to calm fans worried about Alex’s fate, hinting that more is coming. He wrote, “Just so you know, Alex Russo is tougher than you think – and there’s a lot more to come… Stay tuned, #WizardsBeyond has got some magical surprises up our sleeves.”
Selena Gomez, who also serves as an executive producer, has shared her enthusiasm for returning to the role. “It’s actually really fun for me to come back and hang out with you guys. It’s honestly been nostalgic for me,” Gomez said. “It’s honestly been a wonderful experience. It’s so fun to see us pass the baton to a new generation.”
