The creator of Sword Art Online, Reki Kawahara, is bringing another virtual world story to the screen. His latest light novel series, Demons’ Crest, is now officially set to arrive in 2026. The production team dropped the first teaser trailer and teaser visual on March 23, 2026, giving fans a look at the dark and mysterious world where a new kind of death game begins.
The announcement also revealed the main voice actors for the twin protagonists and the animation studio behind the project. Production I.G, the studio known for Kaiju No. 8 and Psycho-Pass, is handling the animation. This marks Kawahara’s third major work to get an anime adaptation, following Sword Art Online and Accel World.
First Teaser Trailer Shows a Dark Mystery
The teaser trailer, released alongside the announcement, shows the main character Yuuma Ashihara walking alone through a dimly lit building. The video has a dark and mysterious tone. Near the end, a young girl with an unnaturally wide mouth appears, and Yuuma’s scream fills the screen.
The teaser visual carries the tagline: “This is a game, and it is reality.” This line sets up the central idea of the series, where the virtual game world and the real world begin to merge. The 2026 release window means fans can expect the series to premiere sometime next year, though a specific month has not been announced yet.
Main Cast Announced for the Ashihara Twins
Haruka Shiraishi will voice the main character, Yuuma Ashihara, an 11-year-old boy. This is Shiraishi’s first time playing a male lead character. She is known for her roles as Asirpa in Golden Kamuy and Fubuki in One-Punch Man.
Shiraishi shared her excitement about the role, saying:
“It is a great honor to be involved in a work by Reki Kawahara. This is my first time playing a male protagonist, so when I was told that I had been cast as Yuuma, I was both surprised and incredibly happy. I will do my very best to bring Yuuma to life.”
Konomi Inagaki will voice Sawa Ashihara, Yuuma’s twin sister. Inagaki has appeared in The Rising of the Shield Hero and Busamen Gachi Fighter. She described Sawa as a dependable girl with a sharp tongue who secretly cares deeply for her brother and may be hiding a secret.
Inagaki added:
“The anime will also include developments that differ from the original work, and even during recording, we find ourselves eager to know what happens next. I hope you will support Yuuma and his friends as they struggle to survive.”
Strong Production Team Behind the Series
The production team brings together experienced industry professionals. Kenichiro Komaya (Nina the Starry Bride) is directing the series, with Shinji Ushiro (Don’t Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro) serving as chief director.
Eiji Umehara (Vivy: Fluorite Eye’s Song) is handling the series composition. The character designs come from Yukiko Horiguchi, who also illustrated the original light novels. Horiguchi is well known for her character design work on K-On! and Lucky Star.
The music will be composed by Yuki Hayashi (My Hero Academia, Wistoria: Wand and Sword) and Naoyuki Chikatani (Beast Tamer).
What Is Demons’ Crest About?
Demons’ Crest takes place in a world where a fully immersive VRMMORPG called “Actual Magic” starts merging with reality. The story follows Yuuma Ashihara and his classmates, a group of sixth graders who were supposed to enjoy a test play session of the new game.
Instead, Yuuma finds himself trapped alone in a strange building. One of his classmates turns into a monster, and dangers appear everywhere. The group’s only hope comes from a demon named Valac, who possesses Yuuma’s twin sister, Sawa. Together, they must fight to survive and save their lost friend Nagi.
Unlike Sword Art Online, where players are trapped inside a virtual world, Demons’ Crest explores what happens when the virtual world invades the real one. The series mixes mixed reality (MR) with the death game formula that made Kawahara famous.
Author Reki Kawahara Shares His Thoughts
Reki Kawahara, who started writing the light novels in November 2022, explained why this story matters to him. The fourth light novel volume came out in December 2025.
Kawahara said:
“Demons’ Crest is packed with everything I love: death games, MMORPGs, enclosed spaces, virtual worlds, friendship and conflict, hope and despair, clashes of thought, and emotional confrontations. It was not an easy task to bring all of these elements together into a single story, but after a long, long period of preparation, we have finally reached the moment of announcement.”
He also encouraged fans to follow the journey of Yuuma and Sawa until the end of their survival story.
Light Novel Available in English
For those who want to experience the story before the anime arrives, Yen Press has licensed the light novels for English release. Three volumes are currently available in English, with more on the way. The original Japanese light novels are published under Kadokawa’s Dengeki Bunko imprint.
A webtoon adaptation drawn by TOmoe also began serialization in 2022 on the HykeComic platform. Kadokawa published the first compiled volume in June 2024.
