The search is over, but the danger has just begun. In the seventh episode of Apple TV+’s Down Cemetery Road, the major characters finally converge on a secret Scottish island, leading to a tense standoff, a significant character death, and an explosive cliffhanger that leaves a key hero’s fate unknown.
Downey’s Dangerous Reunion and a Hidden Tracker
The episode opens with two separate arrivals on the hidden island. Michael Downey arrives by boat, and the assassin Amos follows close behind in a speedboat. Inside a government facility, agent Steph is guarding the young girl, Dinah. A hooded figure swiftly kills the two guards outside and storms the building, leading Steph and Dinah on a frantic chase.
For a moment, the show creates confusion, making viewers wonder if the ruthless killer is Amos. The tension breaks when Dinah recognizes the figure as her “Uncle Mike” and runs into his arms. In a touching moment of relief, Downey and Dinah are reunited. Downey, in clear pain, finds and takes a dose of Histropine from a lab cabinet.
Dinah shows Downey her blue teddy bear, a gift from Amos. Downey immediately suspects it contains a tracking device. He takes the bear and later leaves it behind in the facility to mislead his pursuer. This proves prescient, as Amos is indeed using the tracker to follow them. He finds the teddy bear in an empty room and shoots it in frustration before continuing his hunt.
Sarah and Zoe’s Perilous Journey at Sea
While Downey finds Dinah, Sarah and Zoe are struggling at sea. Having commandeered a ferry, they are completely lost, with a broken compass and a seasick Zoe. Their situation worsens when the boat runs out of fuel. With no other choice, they free the Scottish captain they had locked in the hold.
At first reluctant, the captain’s attitude changes when Sarah tells him they are heading to a secret island used by the English government for illegal activities.
“Why didn’t you say so?” the captain replies, now eager to help strike a blow against the English.
He refuels the boat and expertly navigates them to the island, though he refuses to dock because the beach is reportedly mined. Before going ashore, a moment of quiet allows Zoe to open up to Sarah about her late husband, Joe. She quotes a line from his favorite poem, Philip Larkin’s “Toads Revisited,” which gives the series its title. Zoe tells Sarah that her relentless nature reminds her of Joe. When Sarah offers her a chance to grieve, Zoe reveals a darker emotion driving her: “I want to hurt someone”.
The Convergence and a Sudden Attack
Back in London, the political conspiracy begins to crack. Zoe’s mother-in-law, Janice, contacts DI Varma as instructed, handing over an envelope of evidence Zoe collected on the government’s covert project. Varma delivers this to the Secretary of State for Defence, Talia Ross. Talia confronts the shadowy official known as C with the allegations, but he maintains a stoic front, refusing to admit anything. It’s clear his position is now under serious threat.
On the island, Downey, Dinah, and Steph hide in an abandoned house. Almost immediately, Sarah and Zoe, having trekked from the beach, stumble upon the same building. In a heartfelt scene, Sarah finally meets the real Dinah and gives her a get-well card from her friends. Zoe also meets Downey, telling him simply, “I’m sorry for what happened to you”.
This brief moment of connection is shattered when Amos arrives. He surrounds the house and opens fire with a powerful assault rifle. Dinah panics and runs across the room. Steph tries to pull her to safety but is shot in the head and killed instantly.
A Heroic Sacrifice and a Villain’s Revenge
With the group trapped, Downey devises a desperate plan. He will lure Amos away, acting as a decoy so the others can escape to a boat. Sarah and Zoe initially resist, but Downey insists he is Amos’s primary target. He creates a distraction, and as Amos closes in on their location, Downey fires shots outside to draw him away.
A tense chase ensues. Downey, with limited ammunition, tries to outmaneuver Amos but is ultimately cornered. Amos shoots him in the leg. In his final moments, Downey tells Amos to stop monologuing and just get on with it.
Amos accepts the advice and kills Downey.
Amos then cuts off one of Downey’s dreadlocks, placing it in a small red book as a trophy. With Downey dead, Amos returns to find the women, but they have not yet escaped.

Zoe now takes up the role of decoy. She tells Sarah to take Dinah to Amos’s inflatable boat at the base of the cliffs and then circle back to pick her up from the beach. Sarah and Dinah face a terrifying challenge: the only way down the sheer cliff is to jump into the sea below. They take the leap and make it to the boat.
Meanwhile, Zoe runs across the rocky landscape with Amos in pursuit, firing shots at her. She hides, and Amos briefly turns away. However, Sarah’s shouts from the boat below draw his attention back. Amos returns to the cliff edge and sees Zoe exposed on the mined beach. He starts shooting at the ground.
The beach’s warning signs were real. Amos’s bullets trigger a chain reaction of explosions. A landmine detonates right next to Zoe, and the blast sends her body flying through the air. The final shot shows Sarah watching in horror from the inflatable boat as she speeds away with Dinah, forced to leave Zoe behind. The Scottish ferry captain is seen watching the events from offshore, and the assassin Hamza is still en route by helicopter, setting the stage for a final confrontation in the season finale.
