Good news for thriller fans: Apple TV has officially ordered a second season of its hit detective series Down Cemetery Road. The announcement came just two days after the intense first season finale aired on December 10, 2025. The show, starring the acclaimed duo of Emma Thompson and Ruth Wilson, will bring back the mismatched pair of private investigator Zoë Boehm and art restorer Sarah Trafford for another dangerous adventure. The quick renewal is a strong sign of the show’s success, following its global premiere on October 29, 2025.

What We Know About Season 2’s Story

The next season will pull Zoë and Sarah into a new, complex case. According to Apple TV, the story begins when a woman falls in front of a train. Zoë is hired to look into what seems like a simple accident.

This investigation, however, quickly pulls them into the high-stakes and dangerous world of black market antiquities. As they navigate this glamorous yet ruthless environment, their pursuit of the truth leads them directly into the path of a brutal serial killer determined to cover up his crimes at any cost.

“Audiences around the world fell in love with ‘Down Cemetery Road’ and I am glad the unlikely duo of Zoë and Sarah will be back with their unique form of acerbic wit,” said Jay Hunt, creative director for Europe at Apple TV.

The Stars and Creator React to the News

Emma Thompson, who both stars as Zoë and helps produce the show, shared her excitement about the renewal. She gave special praise to her co-star and the writing team.

“I’m so thrilled that Down Cemetery Road has been enjoyed enough to warrant a second season,” Thompson said. “The thought of working with the team again, with wonderful Morwenna Banks in the writer’s seat and the indomitable Ruth Wilson who is the best and most brilliant co-star any aging Dame could desire, is frankly far more than I feel I deserve. Zoë Boehm is a punkishly delicious avatar and I can’t wait to pull on her knockoff Doc Martens again. Thanks to everyone who watched! We are go for the next one and it’s all down to you.”

The series is another successful television adaptation from Mick Herron, the award-winning author also behind Apple TV’s popular spy drama Slow Horses. The creative team behind season one is largely returning, with Morwenna Banks again writing and serving as executive producer. Börkur Sigþórssen (Insomnia) will step in as the lead director for the new season.

Season 1 Recap and Success

The first season of Down Cemetery Road introduced viewers to Zoë Boehm and Sarah Trafford. Their paths crossed after an explosion rocked a quiet suburban neighborhood and a young girl, Dinah, went missing on the same night. Sarah, suspicious of the official story, hired Zoë and her husband Joe to investigate. What started as a missing persons case spiraled into a deadly conspiracy involving government cover-ups, experimental drugs, and a secret military unit.

The eight-episode season was released weekly, concluding with its finale on December 10. Critics responded positively, with the season earning a Certified Fresh rating of 79% on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviews highlighted the show as a “twisty, nerve-racking ride” and praised the “excellent performances” from Thompson and Wilson.

What Comes Next for the Series?

With the renewal confirmed, the main question is when fans can expect new episodes. A production or release date for season two has not yet been announced. It is also not yet confirmed which supporting cast members from the first season might return.

The series is based on Mick Herron’s “Zoë Boehm” series of novels. The first season adapted the initial book, Down Cemetery Road. The next books in the series are The Last Voice You Hear, Why We Die, and Smoke and Whispers. Ruth Wilson has indicated that the plan may be to adapt the remaining books over two more seasons, though the television story may bring her character, Sarah, into the narrative earlier than the books do.

For now, the complete first season of Down Cemetery Road is available to stream globally on Apple TV.
