The penultimate episode of HBO’s DTF St. Louis has arrived, and it is the most emotional chapter of the series so far. Episode 6, titled “The Denny’s Plan,” does not reveal who killed Floyd Smernitch (David Harbour). But it does something more important. It shows the exact moment Floyd’s spirit broke.

This episode goes back to 2018 to explain the biggest mystery of the season: the fake dating profile known as Tiger Tiger. Viewers finally learn why Clark Forrest (Jason Bateman) created the account and how a well-meaning lie turned into a disaster that may have led to murder.

The episode aired on April 5, 2026, at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and is also streaming on Max. With only one episode left, the pressure is on to answer the big question: Why did Floyd go to the pool if his date canceled?

Clark’s Confession Reveals The Origin Of Tiger Tiger

The episode opens with Clark sitting in the interrogation room with Detectives Jodie Plumb (Joy Sunday) and Donoghue Homer (Richard Jenkins). He starts talking about the “Tiger Tiger” profile. The story goes back to a painful night between Floyd and his wife, Carol Love-Smernitch (Linda Cardellini).

Floyd tried to get close to Carol, hoping to fix their relationship. But Carol looked at him and said she felt the urge to “squirm” under him. That one word destroyed Floyd. He lost his usual happy and positive personality. Clark saw his best friend falling apart and wanted to help.

So Clark did something strange. He made a fake profile on the DTF dating app using the name “Tiger Tiger.” He matched with Floyd, thinking it would give his friend a small confidence boost. Clark never expected Floyd to actually want to meet this mystery person.

But Floyd, who feels invisible in his marriage and in life, saw the match as a real chance to connect with someone. He told Clark he wanted to meet Tiger Tiger. If they hugged and it led to something physical, that was fine with Floyd. He just wanted to feel wanted.

Clark was trapped. He could not admit the truth without breaking Floyd completely. So he came up with “The Denny’s Plan.”

The Denny’s Plan Backfires In The Worst Way

Clark traveled to Chicago for a work trip. He went to a Denny’s restaurant in a neighborhood with many gay men. His plan was simple but awkward. He wanted to find a stranger he could pay to pretend to be Tiger Tiger and go on a date with Floyd.

Chris Perfetti, known for Abbott Elementary, makes his first appearance in this episode as the stranger who accepts Clark’s offer. The deal was $900 for the man to meet Floyd and act attracted to him.

Everything seemed set. But when the hired man arrived at the park in St. Louis, he saw Floyd from a distance. The photos Clark had shown were ten years old. The real Floyd looked different. The man panicked and walked away. Floyd saw Clark talking to this stranger and realized something was wrong.

Clark had no choice but to tell Floyd the truth. The profile was fake. Tiger Tiger was never real. Clark had made the whole thing up to try to make Floyd feel better.

“You’re my best friend, and I love you.” – Clark signs to Floyd from across the park.

The confession broke Floyd. His confidence, already damaged by Carol’s words, was gone. The one person he trusted had been lying to him. The episode ends with Floyd and Clark signing to each other from a distance. The words are loving, but the damage is done.

The Big Question Remains Unanswered

Back in the present day, the detectives ask Clark a key question. If Tiger Tiger was not real and the meeting was canceled, why did Floyd go to the pool alone that night? Someone else must have told him to be there. The audience does not get an answer in Episode 6.

The show has kept the killer’s identity a secret. Some viewers think Carol did it because she wanted Floyd’s money. Others believe Clark’s lies pushed Floyd to a breaking point, making him a target. There is also a chance someone else, like Clark’s wife or Floyd’s stepson Richard (Arlan Ruf), is responsible.
