The Dark Winds season 4 finale delivered a tense, emotional ending to the eight-episode arc. Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) managed to save teenager Billie Tsosie (Isabel DeRoy-Olson) and arrest the obsessive killer Irene Vaggan (Franka Potente). However, the episode titled โNiโ Hodisxวซs (The Glittering World)โ ended with a murder that changes everything for the Navajo Tribal Police.
The episode aired on AMC on Sunday, April 5, 2026, and is now streaming on AMC+.
Joe Leaphorn Escapes Vagganโs Twisted Bunker
The finale picks up right after the penultimate episodeโs cliffhanger. Joe Leaphorn wakes up tied to a chair in a bunker. Irene Vaggan has also captured Billie and tries to force them to play a twisted โfamilyโ game.
Vaggan is not an ordinary criminal. She grew up in Germany during the war with Nazi family members who trained her to bring back the Fourth Reich. She escaped to California and used her skills in the underworld. Her obsession with Joe Leaphorn started because she read fantasy novels about the Southwest as a child and believed Joe was the warrior of her dreams.
Franka Potente, who plays Vaggan, explained her characterโs strange behavior:
โShe has all these ideas of family, which she never had. In her mind, sheโs just fabricating this narrative. Itโs like a play sheโs putting on where she says, โYouโre going to be the dad and Iโm going to be the mom, and sheโs going to be the kid.โ Irene has no idea what love or trust means.โ
Joe Leaphorn uses his wits to escape. He creates a mask from bed sheets to survive the knockout gas Vaggan uses to control them. After freeing himself and Billie, Vaggan catches them again. Joe then plays along with her fantasy to gain her trust.
He asks Vaggan to take them outside for a traditional Navajo prayer facing east. He lights some brush and speaks in Dinรฉ. At the right moment, he throws the lit brush onto a gas spill he spotted earlier. The explosion burns Vagganโs face badly. Joe and Billie escape as Vaggan rolls on the ground trying to put out the fire.
Joe Spars Vaggan Instead of Killing Her
Even after everything Irene Vaggan did, Joe Leaphorn chooses not to kill her. Vaggan tries to get Joe to murder her, but he refuses.
โYou are under arrest for murder,โ he tells her.
She smiles back at him and says, โYou canโt live without me.โ
Zahn McClarnon talked about his characterโs connection to Vaggan:
โThere was some dark obsession that Vaggan had for Leaphorn. I think Joe found her kind of strangely fascinating.โ
Jim Cheeโs Healing Ceremony Brings the Community Together
Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) has been suffering from ghost sickness after entering a death hogan earlier in the season. He prepares for a healing ceremony but fears no one will show up.
Bernadette Manuelito (Jessica Matten) stays by his side. But when Chee goes inside, the entire community arrives. Joe Leaphorn brings a truck full of firewood. Everyone from the Navajo Tribal Police shows up, along with neighbors and friends. Even FBI agent Toby Shaw (Luke Barnett) and Cheeโs old schoolteacher attend.
Kiowa Gordon became emotional talking about the scene:
โTo see the people that were coming out of the woodwork, just showing up in their cars, was really eye-opening to Chee. He didnโt realize how much people actually cared about him.โ
Emma Leaphorn (Deanna Allison) also returns from Los Angeles for the ceremony. She supports Chee but does not reunite with Joe. Deanna Allison explained Emmaโs choice:
โRight now she just needs to have her own mental clarity. She needs to replenish her soul. Only you can find that in your own hรณzhรณ (harmony and balance).โ
Dominic McNair Walks Free From Prison
Joe Leaphorn visits crime boss Dominic McNair (Titus Welliver) in prison. McNair tells Joe the murder charges will not stick because all the evidence is gone and witnesses are dead.
Joe tells McNair he is not worried. He says when McNair gets free, all he needs to do is knock on Joeโs door. McNair is left alone with a worried look on his face. Even though he walks free, he seems scared to go near the reservation again.
Gordo Sena Is Murdered in the Final Moments
The episode seems to end on a hopeful note. Joe Leaphorn returns home and puts a picture of himself and Emma in a frame. But then he gets news that changes everything.
Gordo Sena (A. Martinez) has been murdered.
Earlier in the episode, Gordo told Joe he wished he hadnโt retired. He said he wanted to die โwith his boots onโ and mentioned he had been digging into old, unsolved cases. Those words became tragically true.
John Wirth, the showrunner, explained why the writers chose to kill Gordo:
โI felt like anything short of an act of God at the end would have really been a bad play for our audience. The only real possible solution was an act of God, which made it inevitable for him to have to stay. We decided that it should be Gordo Sena.โ
A. Martinez has been a recurring cast member since earlier seasons, playing the Scarborough Police Department Acting Chief.
