Ed Sheeran recently shared an amusing anecdote about a 10-day sea voyage he undertook with music producer Benny Blanco due to Blanco’s intense fear of flying. The story was revealed as part of TikTokโ€™s viral “Like a Prayer” trend, where participants narrate funny or surprising moments from their lives.

Journey for Collaboration

The unusual trip occurred while the duo was working on Sheeranโ€™s 2017 album Divide, a project that later became one of his most celebrated works. Blanco, unwilling to fly across the Atlantic, persuaded Sheeran to accompany him on a boat journey from the U.S. to the UK. Though Sheeran admitted the arrangement wasnโ€™t ideal for him, he decided to make the best of it.

โ€œI had to sit on a boat for 10 whole days,โ€ Sheeran recalled with a laugh.

Despite the length of the journey, the pair used the time productively, brainstorming and collaborating on tracks for Divide.

Titanic Moment

The trip, however, was not without its unexpected and humorous moments. One highlight came when the ship crossed the area where the Titanic sank. Sheeran described the announcement over the shipโ€™s intercom as startling and joked about the sudden tourist frenzy onboard:

โ€œTourists rushed to the side of the boat to take pictures of the water. It was surreal.โ€

Sheeran recounted how Benny Blanco suggested they commemorate the moment by watching James Cameronโ€™s iconic Titanic film. The two sat together for the screening, which led to more jokes from Sheeran about their experience.

โ€œBenny held me the entire time. I canโ€™t help thinking, was this his plan all along? Is he going to paint me like one of his French girls?โ€ Sheeran quipped, referencing a famous scene from the movie.

Sheeran even made a humorous jab about the widely debated “wooden door scene,” joking:

โ€œWe could both fit on that wooden doorโ€ฆright?โ€

Creative Spark

While the voyage tested Sheeranโ€™s patience at times, it also sparked his creativity. Reflecting on the fear of being stranded in freezing waters, Sheeran credited the trip for inspiring a portion of the album:

โ€œA good portion of Divide was written when I was in genuine fear of becoming [the frozen dessert] Calippo.โ€

Benny Blanco’s Twist

The most ironic twist came a month later when Benny Blanco overcame his fear of flying and boarded a plane. Sheeran revealed his disbelief at the turn of events, humorously questioning the necessity of their lengthy sea journey:

โ€œAfter all that, Benny got on a flight just a month later. I couldnโ€™t believe it.โ€

This lighthearted story gave fans a glimpse into Sheeran’s sense of humor and his camaraderie with Blanco.
