During the 2025 Golden Globes ceremony, legendary musician Elton John had the audience laughing with a playful mistake while presenting the Best Original Score-Motion Picture award alongside Brandi Carlile. John, known for his sharp wit, jokingly referred to Carlile as Rihanna, despite the two having very distinct musical careers. This light-hearted moment occurred as part of a humorous exchange before announcing the winner.

Elton John’s Eye Health Clarification

The moment took place against the backdrop of recent reports about Elton John‘s eye health. In July 2024, he revealed to Good Morning America that he had experienced significant vision loss in his right eye due to an eye infection he contracted during a vacation in the south of France. The infection left him unable to read or watch anything for a while.

During the Golden Globes, before making his humorous remark about Carlile, John addressed the public’s growing concerns about his eyesight. He reassured the audience, saying that although his vision issues were real, it was not as severe as some reports suggested.

John’s eyesight was further clarified when he spoke candidly about the struggles he’s faced, explaining that his left eye also wasn’t in great condition, which had a direct impact on his ability to read lyrics or watch movies.

The Golden Globes Moment

Before announcing the winner of the Best Original Score category, Elton John pointed to Carlile and joked, “So, I’m so pleased to be here with my co-host—Rihanna.” The playful error made by the iconic musician led to laughter from the crowd, with Carlile taking it in stride. She continued the light moment, discussing how the movie score creates an “emotional landscape” and facilitates a “conversation with the audience through the music.”

The duo then announced the winner of the award: Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for their score of the movie Challengers. Other nominees in the category included Clement Ducol (for Camille), Daniel Blumberg (for The Brutalist), Hans Zimmer (for Dune: Part Two), Kris Bowers (for The Wild Robot), and Volker Bertelmann (for Conclave).
