Ezra Miller is set to star in a new vampire movie directed by Lynne Ramsay, marking their first major acting role since multiple arrests and controversies. The actor, known for The Flash and Fantastic Beasts, has kept a low profile since 2022 but recently appeared at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.
Millerโs comeback comes after years of legal issues, including arrests for assault, disorderly conduct, and burglary. They also faced accusations of inappropriate behavior with minors and erratic public incidents. In 2022, Miller apologized and said they were seeking treatment for mental health struggles.
The new film reunites Miller with Ramsay, who directed them in We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011). Ramsay confirmed the project in an interview, calling it a “vampire movie” with Miller as the lead. No release date has been announced yet.
Millerโs last major role was in The Flash (2023), which underperformed at the box office. Warner Bros. considered recasting them due to their legal troubles, but director Andy Muschietti defended their performance.
“I donโt think thereโs anyone that can play that character as well as they did,” Muschietti said in 2023.
Millerโs controversies began in 2020 when a video showed them choking a woman in Iceland. Over the next two years, they were arrested multiple times in Hawaii for assault and disorderly conduct. They also faced restraining orders and accusations of grooming minors, which they denied.
In 2022, Miller was charged with felony burglary in Vermont for allegedly stealing alcohol from a neighborโs home. They pleaded guilty to a lesser charge in 2023 and received probation.
Despite the scandals, Ramsay is moving forward with Miller as the star of her next film. The director is known for intense psychological dramas, and the vampire project is expected to be dark and unconventional.
Miller made a surprise appearance at Cannes in May 2025 to support Ramsayโs latest film, Die, My Love. They avoided photographers and did not give interviews.
The actor has not taken on new roles since The Flash but was recently recast in Invincible, where they voiced a minor character in Season 1. Eric Bauza replaced them in future episodes.
Millerโs future in Hollywood remains uncertain, but their collaboration with Ramsay suggests a possible career revival. The director has a history of working with troubled actors, including Joaquin Phoenix and Tilda Swinton.
Warner Bros. has not commented on Millerโs involvement in future DC projects. The studio previously delayed The Flash due to their legal issues but ultimately released the film as planned.
Millerโs statement in 2022 acknowledged their struggles and promised change.
“I now understand that I am suffering complex mental health issues and have begun ongoing treatment,” they said. “I want to apologize to everyone that I have alarmed and upset with my past behavior.”
The upcoming vampire movie does not yet have a production timeline. Ramsay is also developing three other scripts, but she confirmed this project will not take a decade to complete.
“You wonโt wait for 10 years,” she told The Los Angeles Times. “I donโt have 10 years. Iโve got to do it quicker than that.”
Millerโs return to acting has sparked mixed reactions online. Some fans support their comeback, while others remain skeptical due to their past behavior.
The actorโs legal troubles began in 2011 with a marijuana possession charge, which was later dismissed. Their most serious incidents occurred between 2020 and 2022, leading to widespread criticism.
Millerโs career initially showed promise with roles in The Perks of Being a Wallflower and We Need to Talk About Kevin. Their work in Justice League and Fantastic Beasts made them a rising star before the controversies derailed their momentum.
The vampire film will be Millerโs first leading role since The Flash. Ramsayโs movies often explore dark themes, which could align with Millerโs controversial public image.
No further details about the plot or cast have been revealed. The project is still in early development.
Millerโs last public statement was in 2023 after a protective order against them was lifted.
“Iโm encouraged by todayโs outcome and very grateful at this moment to everyone who has stood beside me,” they wrote on Instagram.
The actorโs future projects will likely depend on the reception of their upcoming film and their ability to avoid further legal issues.
