The latest episode of For All Mankind Season 5 brings a heartbreaking end to one of television’s most beloved characters. Episode 3, titled “Home,” shows Ed Baldwin (Joel Kinnaman) making peace with his fate after a cancer diagnosis. The episode released on April 10, 2026, on Apple TV+ and delivers an emotional farewell that fans have been dreading since the season began.
Ed ends up in the hospital after falling unconscious following his risky flight to help Lee Jung-Gil escape in the previous episode. Doctors confirm what viewers already suspected: Stage 3 cancer has spread, and the legendary astronaut does not have much time left.
Ed Baldwin Chooses Quality Over Quantity in His Final Days
When doctors suggest chemotherapy, Ed refuses without hesitation. He tells his family he would rather spend his remaining days as himself instead of suffering through treatments that would only extend his life by a few weeks. Kelly Baldwin (Cynthy Wu) tries to convince her father to try experimental options, but Ed asks her to focus on the Titan mission instead of trying to save him.
The episode uses flashbacks to the Korean War to explain why Ed has always carried guilt and loyalty so close to his heart. A friend died trying to help Ed during the war, and that memory never left him. These scenes show Joel Kinnaman without the old-age prosthetics, playing a much younger version of the character.
“Even though this has always been an ensemble show that follows a lot of different characters, Ed has a little special place in the center of the show,” Kinnaman told Inverse in an interview about his character’s departure.
Ed spends his final moments with his grandson Alex (Sean Kaufman). There is no panic or rushed goodbye. Alex stays by his side, making sure he is not alone. Ed takes one last sip of water and passes away peacefully, exactly how he wanted to go.
The episode ends with a dream sequence where Ed sees himself walking toward a shuttle launch. His late best friend Gordo Stevens (Michael Dorman), ex-wife Karen Baldwin (Shantel VanSanten), and son Shane appear to guide him. It is a rare moment of fantasy for a show that usually stays grounded in realism.
Aleida Makes a Life-Changing Decision to Save the Mars Mission
While Ed says goodbye, Aleida Rosales (Coral Peña) faces her own difficult choice. News arrives that Kuragin is preparing to launch for Titan in just six weeks. Helios believes there could be life on Titan, and if Kuragin gets there first, they lose everything.
The current ship cannot make the journey. Building a new one is impossible within the time frame. Margo Madison (Wrenn Schmidt) suggests bringing back Sojourner 1, a ship Aleida designed years ago but has not been used in twenty years.
Aleida hesitates at first. The ship is outdated and risky. But the bigger problem is leaving her family on Earth for nearly a year. She tries to manage everything from a distance, but quickly realizes the condition of Sojourner 1 cannot be understood through screens. She needs to be there.
Her family ends up being the ones who push her to go. They tell her to take the opportunity even when she is the one hesitating. Aleida finally makes the call. She is heading to Mars, not because it is easy, but because it is the only way forward.
Margo remains in prison, but her scenes with Aleida continue to be highlights of the season. Wrenn Schmidt delivers powerful moments with just a look or a single line of dialogue.
Mars Political Situation Worsens as Lee Finds Protection
The conflict on Mars deepens in Episode 3. Lee Jung-Gil (C.S. Lee) reaches the ISN compound (Independent Spacefaring Nations) and they refuse to hand him over. From their point of view, sending him back would mean certain death. This decision creates a bigger divide between factions on Mars.
The M-6 leadership wants to shut down any sign of resistance. The Sons and Daughters of Mars are being hunted. The idea of reopening Yoon’s case is dismissed. Keeping order has become more important than finding the truth.
Celia Boyd (Mireille Enos) refuses to accept the official story. She tracks down Mahmoud Hesar, who saw Lee and Yoon before Yoon was killed. Mahmoud works with Kuragin, and when Celia starts asking about suspicious cargo, he gets nervous. Celia follows the lead and gets attacked, waking up in a hospital.
Instead of support, Sheriff Palmer puts her on six weeks of medical leave. It looks like concern, but it is a way to keep her out of the investigation. Celia realizes she cannot trust the people around her. If she wants the truth, she will have to find another way.
