Apple TV+ has made a major decision about one of its longest-running original series. The space drama For All Mankind will return for a sixth season, but this will mark the end of the journey. The announcement came just days before the Season 5 premiere, giving fans clarity about the show’s future while assuring them that the creators will get to finish the story on their own terms.
The renewal confirms that the alternate history series, which reimagines the space race, will conclude after six seasons. Showrunners Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi have long talked about a six or seven-season arc, and now they have the chance to deliver the ending they originally planned.
Apple TV+ Renews the Series for One Final Mission
The streaming platform officially greenlit For All Mankind Season 6 on March 24, 2026, positioning it as the final chapter of the critically acclaimed show. Matt Cherniss, Apple TV’s head of programming, shared that the series has been a cornerstone for the platform since its launch.
“From being one of the first Apple Originals to launch on Apple TV in 2019, ‘For All Mankind’ has remained an innovative, epic sci-fi series that has enthralled fans season after season,” Cherniss said. “As one of Apple TV’s most enduring and celebrated series, it has delivered time and again because of the extraordinary artistry of visionary storytellers Ron, Matt, and Ben, along with our partners at Sony.”
The news arrives ahead of the Season 5 premiere on March 27, 2026, and also before the debut of the spin-off series Star City, which is scheduled to premiere on May 29, 2026. The spin-off will explore the space race from the Soviet perspective, expanding the universe even as the main series prepares to wrap up.
Creators Explain the Decision to End With Season 6
Ronald D. Moore, Matt Wolpert, and Ben Nedivi—the creative team behind the show—released a joint statement explaining why now is the right time to conclude the series. They emphasized that ending with Season 6 was always part of their vision.
“Getting to explore the For All Mankind universe over six seasons has been an amazing privilege, and we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to finish the story the way we’ve always hoped,” Wolpert and Nedivi said. “We’re incredibly proud of what this series has become, and grateful to Apple TV and Sony Pictures Television for helping us see it through to its final chapter.”
The creators previously indicated that they had mapped out a six or seven-season plan for the show. With this renewal, they can execute the intended conclusion rather than facing an abrupt cancellation—a rare outcome for many streaming series today.
What to Expect From the Final Season
While Season 6 does not yet have an official release date, the pattern of the show suggests it will continue moving forward in time. Each season of For All Mankind jumps roughly a decade ahead, exploring how the extended space race reshapes technology, politics, and society.
Season 5 picks up in the 2010s, following the aftermath of the Goldilocks asteroid heist. The Mars colony, Happy Valley, has grown into a thriving settlement with thousands of residents. However, tensions are rising as Earth’s nations try to impose law and order on the Red Planet, creating conflict between Martians and their home countries.
For the final season, viewers can expect the story to advance into the 2020s, bringing the narrative full circle from the 1969 divergence where the Soviet Union reached the moon first. The show has explored how this alternate timeline led to accelerated technological progress, earlier gender equality advancements, and a permanent human presence on Mars.
