Fans of the animated show The Great North are sharing their disappointment on social media after Fox officially canceled the series. The network confirmed the news on October 3, 2025, just two weeks after the show’s fifth season ended on September 14. The heartfelt series about the Tobin family’s life in Alaska will not return for a sixth season.
The Official Announcement
Fox Television Network president Michael Thorn released a statement thanking the show’s creators and crew. He acknowledged the difficulty of the decision while celebrating the show’s five-season run.
โWeโre so grateful for everything Wendy, Lizzie, Loren and the amazing cast and crew put into The Great North,โ said Michael Thorn, President of Fox Television Network. โItโs difficult to say goodbye, but weโre thankful for the five hilarious seasons The Great North brought to the iconic Animation Domination lineup.โ
The cancellation was first hinted at months earlier. In May 2025, when Fox announced its lineup for the 2025-2026 season, The Great North was not included. The show was also left out of a major April deal between Fox and 20th Television Animation that secured four more seasons for established hits like The Simpsons, Family Guy, Bob’s Burgers, and American Dad!.
Why Was The Great North Canceled?
The decision appears to be the result of a crowded animation schedule on Fox. With the renewal of its long-running hits and newer series like Grimsburg and Krapopolis, alongside the return of American Dad!, the network’s animation block was full.
While the show was praised by critics and had a loyal fanbase, its viewership numbers were a factor. In its fifth season, the show averaged about 532,000 total viewers, making it the least-watched scripted show on the network for the season. This made it vulnerable when the network had to make programming decisions.
A Look at The Great North
The Great North was created by Wendy Molyneux, Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin, and Minty Lewis, with Loren Bouchard of Bob’s Burgers serving as an executive producer. It premiered in January 2021.
The show followed the adventures of the Tobin family in the fictional Alaskan town of Lone Moose. At its heart was single dad Beef Tobin, voiced by Nick Offerman, doing his best to raise his kids. The voice cast also included Jenny Slate, Will Forte, Dulcรฉ Sloan, Paul Rust, and Aparna Nancherla.
The series was known for its positive and inclusive storytelling, focusing on family support and love. It stood out for its wholesome tone in Fox’s animation lineup.
Crew and Fan Reactions to the Cancellation
The news was met with sadness by those who worked on the show. Director Aimee Steinberger shared her feelings on social media, calling it one of the few shows she “genuinely loved.”
โSadly we got the news today that The Great North is officially cancelled. Iโm pretty sad about it,โ Steinberger wrote. โItโs one of a very small number of shows Iโve worked on that I genuinely loved and I really loved the whole talented crew I worked with.โ
Fans have taken to social media to express their disappointment, with many calling the cancellation a mistake. Supporters of the show praised its wholesome humor, diverse representation, and focus on a loving family, arguing that it was a unique voice in modern animation. Some fans have also started to express hope that, like other canceled animated series, The Great North could one day be revived on a streaming platform.
The show’s co-creator, Wendy Molyneux, also posted a message of thanks on Instagram, expressing gratitude to the crew and the show’s loyal fans and encouraging people to keep recommending the series.
