The actor who played everyone’s favorite genius kid is back in the spotlight. Frankie Muniz returned as Malcolm in the new revival Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair. The show came out on April 10, 2026, on Hulu in the United States and on Disney+ for international viewers.

Now at 40 years old, Muniz is feeling something he did not expect. He is proud of his acting work again. And he wants more roles. The four-episode reboot brought back the original chaos, and fans are loving it. For Muniz, stepping back onto the set felt like coming home. Now, he is telling Hollywood to give him a call.

A New Feeling for the Child Star

Muniz was just a kid when the original show ran from 2000 to 2006. Back then, he did not think too much about the craft. He showed up, said his lines, and went home. Now, things are different.

“Returning for the Malcolm reboot series was the first time in my career as an actor that I was happy to have the label ‘actor’,” Muniz shared with Entertainment Weekly.

He explained that as a kid, everything just worked out without much planning. But this time, he prepared for scenes. He made plans. He found that the hard work made acting fun again.

Muniz told PEOPLE that he was a little nervous at first. He had not done much acting lately. He wondered if playing Malcolm would come easily to him after so many years. But the moment he saw Bryan Cranston (Hal) and Jane Kaczmarek (Lois), it all clicked.

“It felt like home,” Muniz said. “I was really proud of what we made. I haven’t said that many times when I leave a set.” He admitted that usually, he leaves a job thinking he could have done better. But on this reboot, he felt good every single day.

Juggling Race Cars and Film Sets

Why has Muniz been away from acting? He is now a professional race car driver. He competes full-time in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. His racing schedule is intense. It was actually the hardest part of planning the reboot.

The production team had to change the whole shooting schedule for him. Instead of the usual Monday to Friday filming, they worked Sunday through Thursday. This freed up Muniz to race on Fridays.

“I would film Sunday through Wednesday, fly Thursday, race Friday, and fly back Saturday,” Muniz explained.

It was exhausting. But he was thankful to the production for working around his NASCAR life. He knew how special it was to get another chance to play Malcolm, so he did not complain.

The Gang Is Back Together

The reboot brings back almost all of the original cast. Christopher Masterson returns as the oldest brother Francis. Justin Berfield is back as the troublemaker Reese. Emy Coligado also returns as Piama.

However, fans noticed one missing face. Erik Per Sullivan, who played the sweet piano-playing brother Dewey, chose not to return. He left acting years ago. His last credit was in 2010. For the reboot, actor Caleb Ellsworth-Clark takes over the role of Dewey.

New faces also join the family. Keeley Karsten plays Malcolm’s daughter, Leah. Kiana Madeira plays his girlfriend, Tristan. The story follows Malcolm as he tries to avoid his crazy family. He has kept his distance for over a decade. But his parents demand he come home for their 40th wedding anniversary party.

What the Critics and Fans Are Saying

The reviews for the revival are mixed, but the fans are talking. Many viewers took to social media to share their joy.

“The Malcolm in the Middle reunion has me in tears,” wrote one fan on X.

Another viewer compared it to the recent Scrubs reboot. “The Scrubs reboot is one of the best shows on television right now. It’s incredible. So I was surprised when I watched the first episode of Malcolm in the Middle. Life is still unfair and it was equally good. Sitcoms are back and I’m so happy about it,” they said.

However, not everyone is sold. Some critics feel the show struggles to find its footing. British GQ wrote that the reboot is mostly “bad” except for one episode featuring Bryan Cranston. The review said the humor feels dated compared to the original early 2000s version.

Despite the critical mixed reviews, the audience reaction on streaming platforms has been strong enough to make Muniz hopeful about his future.

Clearing Up the Memory Loss Rumors

Before the reboot came out, there were many stories about Muniz’s health. Fans were worried because he previously said he did not remember filming the original series.

Muniz recently cleared the air. He told the Inside of You podcast that the story was taken out of context.

“I have no memory issues, I have a bad memory,” Muniz explained.

He has had nine concussions and several mini-strokes. But he stressed that he does not have amnesia. He simply does not hold onto old details. He joked that even after a 300-lap race, he only remembers two laps. He even revealed that Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek also could not remember specific old scenes during a cast reunion.

‘Call Me!’

Now that the reboot is out, Muniz has a message for casting directors. He is ready to work. While his main focus is currently on racing—he even raced a Malcolm-branded car at Bristol Motor Speedway on the same day the show premiered—he wants to do more TV and movies.

“I would love the opportunity, but it’s not up to me. So call me!” Muniz told PEOPLE.

He admits that acting is unpredictable. He likes knowing his schedule months in advance, which racing allows. But he is open to offers. He wants to look back on his life without wishing he had tried harder. He is giving acting another real shot.

For fans of the original, seeing Muniz happy and proud of his work is the best part of the reboot.
