The upcoming Harry Potter television series is generating excitement for many reasons. With seven seasons planned, one for each book, the show has room to include details the movies had to skip. Among the most talked-about omissions is a dark mystery that has puzzled fans for over two decades. It involves Lord Voldemort and the process of creating Horcruxes. The books hinted at a horrifying final step required to complete the dark magic ritual, but the details were never shared. The movies left this mystery out entirely. Now, the HBO series has the chance to finally provide answers.

The Harry Potter movies, while loved by audiences worldwide, had to condense hundreds of pages into roughly two-hour films. This meant many subplots and explanations were cut. One of the most significant cuts was the complete explanation of how Voldemort made his Horcruxes. J.K. Rowling wrote the process in a way that left a key part unknown, described by Albus Dumbledore in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince as “too horrible to share.” This vague description left fans to wonder for years about what exactly happened after the act of murder that sealed a soul piece into an object.

The Horcrux Mystery That Left Fans Guessing

In the Harry Potter books, a Horcrux is created by committing murder to tear one’s soul. Then, a spell or ritual is used to trap that torn piece inside an object. However, the specific details of this ritual were never fully explained in the books or movies. Dumbledore mentions to Harry that he has found the memory of Horace Slughorn telling a young Tom Riddle about Horcruxes. In that memory, Slughorn says the process is so evil that he would not even discuss it. The “final step” after the murder was deliberately kept a secret.

For book readers, this missing piece added to the horror of Voldemort’s character. It showed how far he was willing to go to achieve immortality. The movies did not explore this. They showed Voldemort creating Horcruxes but never explained the terrible cost or the specific ritual involved. With the TV series being a longer format, there is now space to include scenes that show Tom Riddle’s descent into darkness. The show can finally answer the question: what exactly was the final step?

Why the TV Format Can Finally Show the Full Story

The HBO series, scheduled to arrive in early 2027, will have around eight episodes per season. This format allows for deeper storytelling. The showrunners Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod have said the series will be a faithful adaptation of the books. Unlike the movies, which had to move quickly from one major plot point to the next, the TV series can take its time.

This extra time is important for exploring Voldemort’s past. The movies barely touched on his family history. In the books, readers visit the Gaunt Shack, where they meet Marvolo Gaunt and Morfin Gaunt, Voldemort’s grandfather and uncle. This visit shows the poverty, violence, and obsession with pure-blood status that shaped young Tom Riddle. It explains why he hated Muggles and his own father. This background is essential to understanding why he would go to such extreme lengths to become immortal. The TV series can dedicate a full episode to this backstory, which would make the Horcrux revelation much more powerful.

Other Cut Stories the TV Series Can Include

The Horcrux mystery is not the only thing the movies left out. The upcoming series has a chance to include many beloved characters and moments. One of the most requested is Peeves the Poltergeist. The mischievous spirit was cut from the movies even though actor Rik Mayall filmed scenes for the first film. In the books, Peeves adds humor and chaos to Hogwarts. He drops things on students, sings rude songs, and even helps fight against Dolores Umbridge. His absence was felt by fans who read the books.

Another missing character is Winky the House-Elf. Her story in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is connected to Barty Crouch Jr. and the events that bring Voldemort back. Without her, the movie version of that plot felt rushed and incomplete. The TV series can also include Hermione’s S.P.E.W. campaign, which shows her fighting for house-elf rights. This storyline adds depth to her character and addresses important themes about equality in the wizarding world.

The Marauders’ backstory is another area the movies glossed over. In the books, James Potter, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew created the Marauder’s Map and became Animagi to help Lupin during his werewolf transformations. This friendship and eventual betrayal is central to the plot of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. The movies only hinted at it. A longer series can show their time at Hogwarts and make the emotional moments in later seasons hit harder.

What to Expect from the HBO Series

The Harry Potter TV series is currently in production. The cast includes Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger. John Lithgow plays Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer is Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu is Severus Snape, and Nick Frost plays Rubeus Hagrid. The first season will cover Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and is set to air on HBO and be available for streaming.

For viewers in the USA, the show will air on HBO and stream on Max. In the UK, it will be available on Sky and NOW TV. Global release details for Canada, Australia, and India are expected to be announced closer to the premiere date in early 2027.
