The upcoming South Korean movie Harbin, featuring an ensemble cast including Hyun Bin, Lee Dong Wook, and Jeon Yeo Been, has undergone a release date adjustment. Originally slated for Christmas Day, December 25, 2024, the historical drama will now premiere a day earlier, on December 24, 2024.

Official Announcement

On December 9, 2024, CJM Entertainment, the production company behind Harbin, officially confirmed the change. While the specific reasons for the rescheduling were not disclosed, the move was announced to ensure the film debuts earlier during the holiday season.

Historical Context and Storyline

Set in 1909, during Japan’s colonization of Korea, Harbin revolves around the life and mission of Ahn Jung Geun, a Korean independence activist. The story follows Ahn as he leads a perilous mission to assassinate Itō Hirobumi, Japan’s first Prime Minister, and a symbol of imperial oppression.

Ahn Jung Geun, the sole survivor of a previous battle, embarks on this mission with his comrades. The group must infiltrate Russian territory, gather resources, and outmaneuver relentless adversaries while under constant threat. The film portrays not only the tactical challenges but also the emotional and moral struggles faced by the freedom fighters.

The narrative emphasizes the sacrifices made for Korea’s independence, exploring themes of resilience, patriotism, and the high cost of freedom.

Glimpse from the Trailer

The previously released trailer offered a preview of the film’s intense storyline. It opens with Itō Hirobumi delivering provocative remarks about Korea, setting a tense atmosphere. The scenes highlight Ahn Jung Geun’s resolve to undertake his mission while capturing the emotional struggles of his comrades.

The trailer also introduces the relentless Japanese Army Lieutenant Colonel Mori Tatsuo, who pursues Ahn Jung Geun and his team, showcasing the high-stakes confrontation between the independence fighters and their enemies.

Key Cast and Crew

Harbin features a star-studded cast:

  • Hyun Bin as General Ahn Jung Geun, the revered Korean independence fighter who assassinated Itō Hirobumi.
  • Lee Dong Wook as Lee Chang Seop, a fellow independence fighter.
  • Park Jung Min, Jo Woo Jin, Jeon Yeo Been, and Yoo Jae Myung in supporting roles.

The film is both directed and written by Woo Min Ho, known for his skill in bringing historical narratives to life.

Anticipation and Historical Relevance

The film’s setting in Harbin, a city pivotal to Ahn Jung Geun’s mission, provides a backdrop for exploring the sacrifices and resilience of those fighting for Korean independence. As a historical drama, Harbin seeks to portray one of the most critical events in Korea’s struggle against Japanese colonial rule.

New Release Details

The rescheduled release date ensures Harbin will premiere on December 24, 2024, during the festive holiday season, creating anticipation for audiences eager to experience this historical epic. The movie will release in South Korea and other regions, with further international release details expected to be announced soon.
