In the latest episode of Apple TV+‘s Invasion, Mitsuki Yamato’s mission to destroy the alien mothership takes a shocking turn. Instead of finding an enemy to defeat, she forms an unexpected bond with a peaceful alien creature, making her question everything she thought she knew about the war. The episode, which aired on October 9, 2025, forces both the character and the audience to see the invasion in a completely new light.
The Mission That Changed Direction
Invasion Season 3, Episode 8, titled “Life in the Dead Zone,” follows Mitsuki Yamato deep inside the dangerous area known as the Dead Zone. Her original goal was simple: reach the alien mothership and use a shard bomb to destroy the hive. However, her mission becomes complicated when she encounters a new type of alien. This creature, which fans are calling a “gardener,” is not hostile. Instead, it is seen peacefully spreading alien fruit across the soil, as if it is planting seeds to create a new home.
This observation makes Mitsuki remember a past conversation with the aliens from Season 2, where the entity did not seem to understand the concept of an “invasion.” She starts to connect the dots and realizes the aliens might not be here to destroy Earth, but to transform it into a place where they can live. They are terraforming the planet, a process that is making the atmosphere poisonous for humans but necessary for their survival. This shifts her mission from one of destruction to one of understanding.
An Unlikely Friendship in the Dead Zone
The heart of the episode is the relationship that develops between Mitsuki and the gardener. While following it, she enters a cave, startling the creature. It sends out sonic pulses in defense, causing the cave to collapse and trapping them both inside. The gardener is injured by the falling rocks.
This dangerous situation leads to a pact. Mitsuki helps the wounded alien escape, and in return, it uses its long tentacles to help her climb out. In the process, she loses her oxygen tank, leaving her exposed to the toxic air of the Dead Zone. Despite this, she continues to follow the gardener, and the two slowly build a silent trust. Their connection is built on a mutual need to survive, showing that empathy can exist between two very different beings.
A Dangerous Encounter with Human Fanatics
Mitsuki’s journey is interrupted when she is captured by a group of alien worshippers called Infinitas. This cult, living in the Dead Zone, believes the aliens are gods who will create a new world and reunite them with their dead loved ones. Their leader, Carmichael, is a grieving father who lost his daughter and clings to the belief that the aliens can bring her back.
The power dynamics within Infinitas are tense. While his followers breathe the toxic air, Carmichael uses a private oxygen tank, claiming he needs it to keep his mind clear for his spiritual duties. Mitsuki tries to reason with him, but when that fails, she uses her skills to break free from her bonds. In the ensuing chaos, Carmichael is killed by his second-in-command, Konrad, who then takes control of the group. Mitsuki escapes but is shot in the leg during her getaway.
A New Perspective on the Alien Enemy
After escaping Infinitas, a wounded and breathless Mitsuki finds the gardener again, now close to death. As it collapses, several other gardeners appear. In one of the episode’s most powerful scenes, they surround their fallen companion and use their own energy to heal it, a clear act of empathy and community.
This act of collective care has a profound effect on Mitsuki. She sees a level of kindness she has not witnessed from the humans she recently encountered. As she watches, she whispers the word “home,” signaling a major shift in her understanding. She is no longer seeing an invader, but a survivor. Before she can act on this new perspective, her injuries and the toxic air overwhelm her, and she collapses. The final shot shows the aliens surrounding her, suggesting they may now try to save her as they saved one of their own.
The episode ends on this ambiguous note, leaving viewers to wonder if Mitsuki will destroy the aliens or join them. Invasion continues to air new episodes every Friday on Apple TV+.
