Red Velvet‘s Joy is reportedly planning to leave SM Entertainment as her contract nears its expiration. The agency recently addressed these reports, offering clarification on the situation.

Rumors of Joy Leaving SM Entertainment

Joy, who was introduced as Red Velvet’s fourth member in 2014, is reportedly considering parting ways with SM Entertainment. According to an exclusive report from Star News, she is exploring new opportunities, including meeting with agencies that specialize in managing actors.

SM Entertainment’s Official Response

SM Entertainment has responded to these reports. In a brief statement to Xportnews, the agency confirmed that discussions about Joy’s contract renewal are ongoing, without revealing further details. While Red Velvet members Seulgi and Irene have already renewed their contracts in 2023 and 2024, respectively, Joy’s contract status remains unclear, along with that of Yeri and Wendy.

Joy’s Concerns with SM Entertainment

In June, Joy expressed frustration with how SM Entertainment handled Red Velvet’s promotions. She highlighted the lack of comeback articles and the absence of a Japanese fan club, making them the only SM group without one. Her concerns have raised questions about her future with the company.

Red Velvet’s Legacy and Joy’s Achievements

Red Velvet debuted in 2014 with the single Happiness and quickly rose to international fame. Joy, praised for her vocal talent, has been acknowledged by prominent figures in the music industry. She became the first SM female artist to receive a Bonsang nomination before debuting solo and the first to be nominated for the Album of the Year Daesang at the Melon Music Awards.

As a group, Red Velvet has made a significant impact, being named among Forbes Korea Power Celebrity in 2018 and 2019. They also gained global recognition, becoming one of the most popular K-pop groups according to Billboard.
