Jamal Roberts has won American Idol Season 23, becoming the first Black man to take the title in 22 years. The last Black male winner was Ruben Studdard in 2003. Roberts, a 27-year-old physical education teacher from Meridian, Mississippi, defeated finalists John Foster and Breanna Nix in a record-breaking finale.
The season finale aired on May 18, 2025, with over 26 million votes cast, the highest in the showโs recent history. Robertsโ emotional performances, including his original single “Heal”, won over fans and judges. His victory marks a major milestone for diversity on the show.
Roberts is a father of three daughtersโHarmoni (6), Lyrik (4), and newborn Gianna Grace. He balances family life with his music career and teaching job at Crestwood Elementary. His journey from a small-town teacher to a national star has inspired many.
“I’m anointed. I know how to use it. I know how to tap in,” Roberts said after his win. “I was overwhelmed. It still hasn’t settled in yet.” He celebrated by making a snow angel on stage, a moment he called unforgettable.
The finale featured performances by stars like Jelly Roll, Jessica Simpson, and Patti LaBelle. Roberts sang a duet with Jelly Roll, while Foster performed with judge Luke Bryan and Nix with Brandon Lake. The judgesโCarrie Underwood, Lionel Richie, and Bryanโpraised the seasonโs talent.
Robertsโ win breaks a long gap since Ruben Studdardโs victory in Season 2. Since then, four Black women have won: Fantasia Barrino, Jordin Sparks, Candice Glover, and Just Sam. Robertsโ success highlights the showโs evolving diversity.
As the winner, Roberts gets a record deal with Hollywood Records and $125,000 upfront, with another $100,000 after completing an album. He plans to release an “inspirational soul” album while staying in his hometown. “I love my city,” he said. “There’s no traffic. I don’t wait in line to eat. I love my life!”
Robertsโ audition with Rick Jamesโ “Mary Jane” impressed the judges early on. His standout performances included “Tennessee Whiskey,” “A Change Is Gonna Come,” and “Beauty and the Beast.” His hometown visit drew 20,000 fans, showing massive local support.
“It felt like an old-school Idol finale,” said showrunner Megan Wolflick, comparing it to Ruben Studdard vs. Clay Aiken. She called this season “multi-genre”, with strong R&B, country, and pop talent.
Runner-up John Foster, an 18-year-old country singer from Louisiana, won fans with songs like “Tell That Angel I Love Her.” Third-place Breanna Nix, a pop-country artist, impressed with “Higher.” Both received huge support.
Robertsโ win is a triumph for Mississippi, joining past winners like Trent Harmon. His storyโfrom church choir singer to American Idol championโresonates with fans nationwide. His next step? Recording his debut album and continuing to inspire.
