Jamal Roberts, a 27-year-old physical education teacher from Meridian, Mississippi, was crowned the winner of American Idol Season 23 on May 18, 2025. The emotional finale saw Roberts defeat fellow finalists John Foster and Breanna Nix in a record-breaking vote. Host Ryan Seacrest announced the results during the live ABC broadcast, calling it the “biggest finale vote in show history” with over 26 million votes cast.
Roberts, a father of three, impressed judges and audiences with his soulful performances. He sang Anthony Hamilton’s “Her Heart” to mark his victory, along with Teeks’ “First Time” and The Temptations’ “Just My Imagination.” His win makes him the first Black male champion since Ruben Studdard in 2003.
The grand prize includes a $250,000 cash reward and a recording contract with Hollywood Records. Roberts receives $125,000 upfront and another $100,000 after completing his debut album. The show also provides up to $300,000 for album production, which acts as an advance repaid from future earnings.
Runner-up John Foster delivered powerful country performances, including Toby Keith’s “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue” and John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads.” Third-place finisher Breanna Nix moved the audience with Katy Nichole’s “In Jesus Name” and Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb.”
The star-studded finale featured guest performances by Salt-N-Pepa, Goo Goo Dolls, Jessica Simpson, Patti LaBelle, and more. Judges Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan, and Carrie Underwood also took the stage, singing Richie’s hit “Stuck on You.”
Roberts’ journey resonated deeply with viewers. Before American Idol, he reached the Top 3 on BET’s “Sunday Best,” a gospel competition. During his audition, he spoke about using music to bring hope to his hometown, Meridian, which faces economic struggles.
“This is where I grew up,” Roberts said. “It can be a whole lot better than it is. So, I’m praying that I can bring a little light to it.” His three daughters—Harmoni, Lyrik, and Gianna—cheered him on throughout the season.
Past winners like Maddie Poppe (Season 16) clarified that the prize money isn’t a straightforward windfall. “You get $250,000, but not really because of taxes,” Poppe explained in a 2022 interview. “It’s an advance from the record deal, and you have to recoup it.”
The Top 14 contestants reunited for a group performance of Queen’s “We Are the Champions” during the finale. Judges praised Roberts’ authenticity and vocal control, with one calling him “the type of artist the world needs today.”
