James Gunn, the director of the highly anticipated Superman: Legacy, has debunked a rumor that the film has a massive budget of $364 million, making it one of the most expensive superhero movies ever made.
The rumor was sparked by an article that claimed to have insider information about the production of the film, which is set to kick off the rebooted DC Universe after The Flash resets the timeline. The article stated that Superman: Legacy would surpass the budget of Justice League, which cost $300 million, and would only be second to Avengers: Age of Ultron, which had a reported cost of over $444 million.
However, Gunn dismissed the rumor as false when a fan asked him about it on Threads, a social media platform. Gunn replied, “Absolutely not. How in the world do they think they know what our budget is?”
Superman: Legacy will feature a new cast and a new story for the Man of Steel.
Superman: Legacy is expected to be released on July 11, 2025, as the first official film of the new DC Universe. The film will follow Clark Kent, a young reporter in Metropolis, as he reconciles his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing and becomes the embodiment of truth, justice, and a brighter tomorrow in a world that views kindness as old-fashioned.
The film will star David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, and Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason.
Gunn, who is also the co-CEO of DC Studios along with producer Peter Safran, has expressed his excitement and passion for the project, which he considers to be “a huge priority, if not the biggest priority” for the studio. He has also teased that the film will have a unique tone and style, different from his previous work on Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad.
Superman: Legacy is part of a larger plan to expand the DC Universe on multiple platforms.
Superman: Legacy is not the only project that Gunn and Safran are working on for the DC Universe. They have also announced several other films, TV shows, and video games that will explore different aspects and characters of the DC Comics lore.
Some of the upcoming projects include Creature Commandos, a TV show about a team of monstrous soldiers that will premiere on Max later this year; Waller, a film that will focus on the ruthless leader of the Suicide Squad, played by Viola Davis; The Authority, a film that will introduce a group of anti-heroes led by Jenny Sparks, played by Anya Taylor-Joy; and Starsky & Hutch, a film that will reboot the classic cop show with a twist, starring John Cena and Kumail Nanjiani.
Gunn and Safran have also revealed that they have plans to connect the DC Universe with other franchises, such as Harry Potter, Fantastic Beasts, and The Matrix, through crossover events and multiverse stories.
With such an ambitious and diverse slate of projects, the DC Universe is set to become one of the most exciting and innovative cinematic universes in the entertainment industry. And it all starts with Superman: Legacy, the film that will redefine the iconic superhero for a new generation of fans.
