The Oscar-winning actor and Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman faces new claims from multiple women, which he calls absolutely false.
Jared Leto has strongly denied sexual assault allegations made by four women in a new BBC documentary. The actor, who is 54 years old, released a statement on Wednesday calling the claims “absolutely and categorically false”. The BBC documentary, titled “Jared Leto: Hollywood’s Dark Secret,” features interviews with 10 women who spoke about their experiences with the actor between 2002 and 2016.
The allegations have drawn significant attention, with nine of the women sharing their stories publicly for the first time. The BBC said it corroborated a number of the accounts with friends and family who were told about the encounters at the time.
What the women allege
Four women have accused Leto of criminal sexual conduct. Their accounts describe incidents that took place when they were teenagers.
One woman, who used the name Isabel, said she was 17 when Leto sexually assaulted her in a motel bathroom in Las Vegas in 2002. Leto was 30 at the time.
Another woman, a former model named Alex, said she was 19 when Leto threatened her with sexual assault in London in 2013. She told the BBC that Leto’s assistant invited her to an after-party, but when she arrived, only Leto was in the hotel room. After he made vulgar comments, she said she left immediately.
A third woman, using the name Clara, said she had underage sex with Leto in California when she was 17. In California, the age of consent is 18, so this would be classified as statutory rape. Clara told the BBC that Leto “shrugged off” a conversation about the age of consent. She also said Leto told her, “I would like you to call me daddy”.
A fourth woman said Leto groomed her and made repeated sexually explicit phone calls to her when she was 16. She said he suggested they should have sex during one of those calls. The BBC said it reviewed a non-disclosure agreement that she was asked to sign, which she refused.
Four other women also said they received strange and often very sexual phone calls from Leto when they were younger. Another woman said that when she was 14, Leto made a lewd comment about her chest during an autograph signing and instructed his security guard to take her backstage. Her mother confronted Leto, but he repeated the comment, she alleged.
Two former employees of Leto’s band also told the documentary that staff felt uncomfortable about how Leto interacted with teenage girls, sometimes inviting them backstage or to his recording house.
Leto’s response
Leto did not respond to the BBC’s repeated attempts to contact him before the documentary was published. After the story was released, he issued a statement through his representatives.
“I have never sexually assaulted anyone in my entire life. These claims are absolutely and categorically false.”
The statement was provided to multiple outlets, including The Associated Press, The Hollywood Reporter, and People magazine.
Background and previous allegations
This is not the first time Leto has faced such accusations. In June 2025, the digital outlet Air Mail published an investigative report that included accounts from nine women describing a pattern of predatory behaviour, unwanted advances and exposing himself between 2006 and 2012. A representative for Leto “expressly denied” those allegations at the time.
Los Angeles DJ and music producer Allie Teilz also publicly alleged on social media that Leto had assaulted her when she was 17. She had previously made similar claims in 2012.
The BBC documentary noted that it has counted more than 120 separate online allegations relating to Leto’s behaviour toward women.
Legal status
As of July 31, 2026, no criminal charges have been announced against Leto in connection with the allegations detailed in the documentary. The Los Angeles Police Department told TMZ that there are “no open cases involving Leto, and investigators did not find any sexual assault or sexual misconduct reports filed against him”.
