Netflix’s horror series Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen has climbed into the streaming platform’s top 10 list since its release on March 26, 2026. The eight-episode thriller, created by Haley Z. Boston and executive produced by the Duffer Brothers (Stranger Things), follows a bride named Rachel and her fiancé Nicky during the week before their wedding. But one character stands out as particularly mysterious: Jules Cunningham, played by Jeff Wilbusch.

At first glance, Jules comes across as cold and strange. He gives awkward stares and offers weird answers. But as the episodes progress, viewers see a different side of him. Wilbusch recently opened up about his character in an interview with Man About Town, explaining that Jules has much more going on beneath the surface.

“I think people will be surprised by how much is underneath Jules. He’s like an iceberg. On the surface, he might be perceived as cold and off-putting, but after you earn his trust, he lets you see more of him, and when something is truly at stake, he fights for it. He’s truly honest with the people he cares about.” – Jeff Wilbusch

How Jeff Wilbusch Built the Role of Jules From the Inside Out

Wilbusch did not want to play Jules as simply a threatening or scary person. Instead, he focused on understanding the character’s wounds and why he builds walls around himself.

“For me, it was understanding Jules’ wounds and his defence mechanisms. I didn’t want to play ‘menace.’ I wanted to play protection, distrust, survival. He can look cold or intense on the outside, but that’s the shell. The tension comes from underneath, from how hard he’s trying to stay in control, keep everyone safe, and keep things contained.” – Jeff Wilbusch

This approach makes Jules feel real. Viewers watching Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen see a man who has been hurt before. He does not trust people easily. But when someone proves themselves worthy of his trust, Jules becomes fiercely loyal. He is the type of person who will put himself in danger to protect the people he loves.

Jules Proves His True Nature Through His Actions in the Series

The Netflix series shows Jules’s hidden side in several key moments. When his son tells him about a mysterious figure called the “Sorry Man” taking Rachel in the middle of the night, Jules does not hesitate. He immediately goes to help Rachel, even telling her to run away and save herself without worrying about his own safety.

Jules also stands out as the only character in Nicky’s family who tells the truth directly. When Rachel tries to convince herself that Nicky is her soulmate, Jules brings Nicky’s lies into the open. He helps Rachel see that Nicky may not be the right person for her, trying to save her from a terrible fate.

“Morally, I do think Jules is a good guy. He wants to protect his family, and he wants to do the right thing. But he has strong defence mechanisms, and before you understand him, he can read as cold, scary, and even menacing. That’s the shell. Underneath, he’s trying to survive – be a good dad, be a good son, be a good partner, and be human. He can’t let what he saw in his childhood happen again.” – Jeff Wilbusch
