Most people know Jimmy Fallon as the cheerful host of The Tonight Show, but two decades ago, he played a small part in the serious HBO war series Band of Brothers. The story of how he filmed his scene, which involved driving a World War II jeep, is a funny tale of nerves and creativity. Fallon himself has shared that he did not know how to drive the vintage vehicle, leading to a memorable behind-the-scenes moment.
The Cameo in ‘Crossroads’
Jimmy Fallon appeared in the fifth episode of Band of Brothers, titled “Crossroads.” This particular episode was directed by the legendary Tom Hanks. Fallon portrayed Lieutenant George C. Rice, a real-life army officer from the 10th Armored Division. His character’s job was crucial: he drove a jeep loaded with ammunition to the frontline soldiers of Easy Company, who were preparing for the Battle of the Bulge. He delivers his supplies, warns the men that they are about to be surrounded by the enemy, and then drives away. The scene is tense and dramatic, requiring the actor to look confident and in command.
The On-Set Driving Trouble
Despite the heroic appearance on screen, the reality of filming was very different. On his own talk show in 2018, Fallon recounted the story. He was incredibly nervous to be acting under the direction of Tom Hanks in such a large-scale production. His task seemed simple: drive a jeep and deliver his line, “Good luck, boys.” The problem was the vehicle itselfโa real WWII jeep with a manual transmission.
“I was so nervous. I had to just drive a jeep and say my line, ‘Good luck, boys.’ It’s a real WWII jeep, so you’ve got to, like, press the thing, put it in neutralโฆ I don’t know how to drive. And I just say my line, and I’m supposed to look really heroic,” Fallon recalled.
His lack of driving skill, combined with his anxiety, led to a technical mishap. He forgot to press the clutch while the vehicle was in gear.
“I’m so nervous. There’s like 200 extras. So I drive, I hit my spot. I go, ‘Good luck, boys,’ and I forget to press the clutch, and these two dudes are pushing the car, and the wheels aren’t moving because the clutch isn’t in. I don’t know how they made it work, but they made it work.”
In the end, the solution was to have two crew members push the jeep from behind to create the illusion that it was moving under its own power. Clever editing in post-production made the final scene look seamless and convincing to audiences.
Fallon’s History with the Set
The Band of Brothers set holds other memories for Jimmy Fallon as well. In a 2025 interview on The Tonight Show, Chet Hanks, Tom Hanks’ son, reminded Fallon that they first met on the set 25 years ago. Chet, who was eight years old at the time, remembered Fallon as being “super nice” to him. Fallon shared his own memory of a young Chet, dressed in a full soldier costume, playfully ordering the actors around and making them do push-ups. This friendly reunion highlights the long-lasting connections made during the production.
The Real Lieutenant George Rice
The character Fallon played was based on a genuine war hero. The real Lieutenant George C. Rice was tasked with the dangerous job of gathering and delivering ammunition to the 101st Airborne Division as German forces closed in. He risked his life making multiple supply runs and was later awarded the Bronze Star for his bravery. This context makes Fallon’s cameo a tribute to a real soldier’s courage, even if the filming of it had its comedic challenges.
