The much-awaited biopic of Italian painter Amedeo Modigliani, titled ‘Modi’, has finally wrapped up its shoot after 25 days of filming in Budapest and Romania. The film, directed by Johnny Depp, stars Al Pacino as Maurice Gangnat, a French art dealer who becomes Modigliani’s patron and friend.
The first behind-the-scenes images of Depp directing Al Pacino have been revealed by the production team, giving fans a glimpse of the chemistry and camaraderie between the two actors. Depp praised Pacino’s contribution to the project, saying that he was “amazing” and “wonderful” to work with.
“I’m so grateful to Al for requesting that I make this film. How could I refuse Pacino? He’s one of my heroes and a legend in his own right. He brought so much depth and charisma to his role as Maurice Gangnat. He was amazing,” Depp said in a statement.
Pacino also expressed his admiration for Depp’s direction skills, saying that he was “transformative” and “enjoyable”. He said that he learned a lot from Depp and his crew, and that he felt like part of their family.
“Johnny is a fantastic director. He has such a vision and a passion for this story. He made me feel like I was part of his world. He taught me so much about painting and life. I had so much fun working with him and everyone else on this film,” Pacino said.
‘Modi’ follows the life of Modigliani in a 48-hour whirlwind during World War One in war-torn Paris. The film depicts how Modigliani navigates through the streets and bars of Paris with his fellow bohemians, while trying to escape from the police who are after him for his involvement in an art theft.
The film also explores Modigliani’s relationship with Beatrice Hastings, an English muse who inspires him to create some of his most iconic works. The film features stunning cinematography by Nicola Pecorini, who captured the beauty and chaos of Paris in the early 20th century.
The film is produced by Johnny Depp’s IN.2 Film, Salome Productions, Barry Navidi Productions, Proton Cinema, The Veterans Red Sea Film Foundation, among others. It is co-produced by the United Kingdom, Italy, and Hungary.
‘Modi’ is expected to release in 2024 by IN THEATERS ONLY.
