Karla Sofía Gascón has responded to speculation that she may have violated an important Academy Awards rule following her recent comments about fellow nominee Fernanda Torres. The Emilia Pérez actress issued a clarification after reports suggested she might have cast a negative light on Torres’ film.
Gascón’s Initial Remarks
Both Gascón and Torres are nominated in the Best Actress category for the upcoming Oscars. The controversy began when, during an interview with Folha De S. Paulo, Gascón spoke about the impact of social media campaigns on the awards race.
She stated that she does not appreciate how some social media teams attempt to “diminish” others’ work. The actress emphasized that such tactics are unnecessary and do not contribute positively.
According to reports, Gascón added, “You don’t need to tear down someone’s work to highlight another’s.” She claimed that, while she has never made any negative remarks about Torres or her film, there were individuals working with Torres who had attempted to discredit Emilia Pérez. She reportedly remarked, “That speaks more about their movie than mine.”

The Oscars Rule in Question
The Academy’s official regulations prohibit “public communication by anyone directly associated with an eligible film attempting to cast a negative or derogatory light on a competing film or achievement.”
Additionally, the rules specify that “any tactic that singles out ‘the competition’ by name or title is expressly forbidden.” This led to speculation about whether Gascón’s remarks could be interpreted as a violation of these guidelines.
Gascón’s Clarification
On January 29, Gascón released a statement to Variety, aiming to clear up misunderstandings. She expressed admiration for Torres, stating that she is a “huge fan” and has greatly enjoyed getting to know her throughout the awards season.
She further clarified that her comments were not directed at Torres personally but were instead addressing the “toxic and violent hate speech” she has faced online. Gascón emphasized that Torres has been a “supportive and generous ally” and that no one directly associated with Torres has participated in negative behavior against her or her film.
