Katie Holmes recently shared a lighthearted moment from her stage career during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The 45-year-old actress recounted a humorous memory of forgetting her lines while performing in the Pulitzer Prize-winning play Our Town alongside Jim Parsons.
Forgotten Line, Quick Recovery
Holmes revealed that during one of the performances, she successfully delivered nearly all her lines but couldn’t recall the very last word of a key dialogue. Instead of pausing, she improvised a nonsensical phrase on the spot. Reflecting on the incident, she explained:
“I said the whole line except the last word and just couldn’t remember it. I made something up, but it didn’t make sense.”
To avoid drawing attention to her mistake, Holmes hurriedly exited the stage. Jim Parsons, who plays the Stage Manager and narrates much of the play, greeted her backstage with a laugh and a supportive hug.
A Memorable Role
Holmes performed the role of Mrs. Webb, a central character in Our Town, a play written by Thornton Wilder. She described the role as “a dream job,” noting the camaraderie of being part of an ensemble cast of 28 actors. She expressed admiration for the timeless themes of the play, which has been adapted for modern audiences in this production.
This wasn’t Holmes’ first experience on Broadway. She made her debut in 2008, performing in Arthur Miller’s All My Sons. Her journey from television star in Dawson’s Creek to a seasoned Broadway actress has been marked by memorable performances and personal growth.
About Our Town
First performed in 1938, Our Town is an American classic that portrays the lives of fictional townspeople in Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire, from 1901 to 1913. The play is known for its minimalistic staging and metatheatrical elements, with the Stage Manager breaking the fourth wall to narrate and interact with the audience.
This production of Our Town incorporates updates to Wilder’s original script, designed to resonate with contemporary theatergoers while retaining its essence. The show is running at the Barrymore Theater and is set to conclude on January 19.
Holmes’ Pre-Show Ritual
Adding a personal touch to her performances, Holmes has a unique ritual before stepping on stage. She visits a Starbucks near the theater, where the staff greets her warmly and wishes her luck. This tradition has become a comforting routine for the actress during her time with Our Town.
