The legal battle between Kim Soo Hyun and the family of late actress Kim Sae Ron is escalating. On May 7, the family’s attorney announced a press conference to reveal what they call a “serious crime” involving the actor. The event is set to expose new claims, including evidence that Kim Soo Hyun dated Kim Sae Ron when she was a minor.
Attorney Boo Ji Seok, representing Kim Sae Ron’s family, stated:
“I will reveal the exact details at the press conference. Aside from the serious crime, there is also evidence related to dating a minor.”
This comes after months of public disputes. Kim Sae Ron’s family previously accused Kim Soo Hyun of dating her when she was underage and claimed his agency pressured her over a debt. Kim Soo Hyun denied these allegations in a tearful press conference on March 31, saying their relationship only began when she was an adult.
The controversy started when Kim Sae Ron’s family held a press conference in March, sharing private messages between the two actors. They claimed the messages proved their relationship began in 2015, when Kim Sae Ron was 15 and Kim Soo Hyun was 27. The family also said Kim Soo Hyun’s agency sent a legal notice demanding repayment of 700 million KRW (about $500,000), which they believe contributed to her emotional distress.
Kim Soo Hyun’s agency, Gold Medalist, has strongly denied all allegations. They filed lawsuits against the family and a YouTube channel for spreading what they call false information. The agency stated:
“We have serious concerns about the continued spread of false information related to Kim Soo Hyun. We ask media to fact-check claims before reporting.”
Kim Sae Ron, a former child actress, passed away in February 2025 at age 24. Her career faced setbacks after a 2022 drunk-driving incident, and her family claims she struggled with depression linked to her past relationship.
Fans are divided. Some support Kim Soo Hyun, while others demand legal action if the new allegations are proven. A petition to revise South Korea’s minor protection laws has gained over 10,000 signatures, calling for stricter penalties for relationships with minors under 19.
