Kim Woo Bin recently shared a funny story about getting annoyed during the filming of his new Netflix series, ‘Genie, Make a Wish’. The actor revealed he was confused and irritated by a staff member’s unusual request, only to discover the person was his friend and fellow actor, Jo In Sung, playing a secret prank on him.
The Annoying Request During a Long Workday
The incident happened while Kim Woo Bin was busy filming for his upcoming fantasy rom-com. He was in the middle of an important and tiring process. The scene required a lot of computer graphics (CG), so he had to undergo a lengthy 3D camera scan. This process can take hours, and actors must often hold very specific facial expressions without moving.
While he was focused on this task, a “staff member” approached him and made a request that seemed to break his concentration. The person told him, “Please smile a little.” Kim Woo Bin was caught off guard. He was trying to keep a blank expression for the scan and found the request strange. He thought to himself, “Why are you making me laugh?” and felt a little annoyed, but he let it pass.
A short time later, the same person came back and repeated the request, asking him to “Please take a picture with a smile.” This time, Kim Woo Bin’s annoyance grew. The situation was not funny to him, and the request did not seem related to his work. He wondered why he had to smile in such a serious moment.
The Surprising Prankster is Revealed
His irritation did not last long. The person who had been bothering him came closer, adjusted his clothes, and said, “If you smile while shooting, doesn’t it feel good?” It was at this moment that Kim Woo Bin looked up and realized the “staff member” was not a staff member at all.
The man was his good friend and senior actor, Jo In Sung. Jo In Sung had come to visit the set from a project next door and decided to play a joke on his friend. Kim Woo Bin’s frustration immediately turned to surprise and laughter. He had been tricked by a good friend lightening the mood. The actor later joked about the event, saying, “Thanks to him, the atmosphere on the set has improved.”
A Highly Anticipated Series and a Reunited Pair
This behind-the-scenes story comes as Kim Woo Bin promotes his new Netflix series, ‘Genie, Make a Wish’, which is scheduled to premiere on October 3, 2025. The series is a fantasy romantic comedy written by Kim Eun-sook, who also wrote the intense drama ‘The Glory’.
In the show, Kim Woo Bin plays Genie, a mystical spirit who wakes up after a thousand years of sleep. He is found in the Dubai desert by a woman named Ga-young, played by Suzy. Ga-young is a human who suppresses her emotions. She becomes his new master and is granted three wishes. Their relationship starts with a major clash. Genie, who is also known as Iblis (Satan), believes humans are fundamentally flawed. Ga-young, however, holds onto her grandmother’s teaching that people are inherently good. They enter a life-or-death wager to prove their opposing views.
The series marks the first on-screen reunion of Kim Woo Bin and Suzy in nine years, since they starred together in ‘The Uncontrollably Fond’. The show also features a strong supporting cast, including Ahn Eun-jin, Noh Sang-hyun, Ko Kyu-pil, and Lee Zoo-young.
Kim Woo Bin’s Unique Character
At a recent production presentation for the series, Kim Woo Bin talked about the challenge of playing his non-human character. He described Genie as a complex being with many sides.
“Genie has various aspects,” the actor explained. “He is cheerful and strong, sometimes cruel, scary, and insignificant, but he has a cute side. He has a human appearance, but he is not human, so he has a strange, awkward, a little different rhythm. He seems uncomfortable to others, but I put a lot of thought into it to give him a feeling of comfort.”
His co-star, Suzy, also commented on the project, noting that the script was fresh and fun. She described her character, Ga-young, as having antisocial traits but firmly believing in the core idea that humans are good.
‘Genie, Make a Wish’ will be available for streaming worldwide on Netflix starting October 3, 2025.
