The record-breaking animated film KPop Demon Hunters has taken the world by storm, and with its massive success, fans are already dreaming of a sequel. The movie, which follows the K-pop girl group HUNTR/X as they battle demons, has not only dominated Netflix charts but also sparked countless fan discussions and theories about where the story could go next. In a recent interview, director Maggie Kang addressed this fan excitement and shared her thoughts on the future.

The Record-Breaking Phenomenon

“KPop Demon Hunters” has achieved what few films ever have on Netflix. As of late September 2025, the movie celebrated its 15th consecutive week in the platform’s Top 10, breaking the previous record held by “Red Notice”. Even more impressive, the film’s viewership actually grew over time, doubling the audience of the number two title in its 15th week with 19.3 million views. It became the first film in Netflix history to record over 20 million views in each of its first six weeks, a clear sign of its staying power and dedicated fanbase.

The film’s success isn’t limited to viewing numbers. Its soundtrack has dominated music charts, gathering more than 3 billion global streams to date. The breakout hit “Golden” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and the soundtrack became the most-consumed in the U.S. so far this year. This cross-platform success demonstrates the deep connection fans have formed with the world of HUNTR/X.

The Creative Vision Behind the World

For director Maggie Kang, the film was a deeply personal project. She shared that her main goal was to create a film that celebrated Korean culture. “Growing up everyone knew Chinese and Japanese culture well but Koreans were not even on the map,” Kang explained. “Now that we are, I feel so much pride and I just wanted to express this pride through a film that celebrated our culture, all aspects of it.”

The characters in the film were inspired by a wide range of K-pop idols and actors. The rival boy band Saja Boys drew inspiration from groups like Tomorrow X Together, BTS, Stray Kids, ATEEZ, BIGBANG, and Monsta X. For the members of HUNTR/X, Kang and her team looked to groups like BLACKPINK, ITZY, and TWICE, ensuring each character had a distinct look and personality.

Kang emphasized that she and co-director Chris Appelhans always intended to create a film with deeper themes that would resonate with older audiences while still being accessible to younger viewers. “We wanted to tackle hard subjects like shame and the voices in your head,” she said, noting that even young children understood and related to these themes during early screenings.

The Directors on Future Possibilities

With the film’s unprecedented success, questions about a sequel are inevitable. Both Kang and Appelhans have confirmed they are actively considering what the future may hold for the “KPop Demon Hunters” universe. In recent discussions, they acknowledged the Oscar and Grammy awards buzz surrounding the film and expressed appreciation for the recognition.

The directors are reportedly thinking about a potential sequel, though they are currently managing their busy schedules day by day. The massive fan response and record-breaking performance have certainly made the prospect of continuing the story more likely. Internally, Netflix is reportedly already referring to the franchise as its own “Frozen,” indicating significant long-term plans.

Regarding fan theories and input, Kang has previously spoken about the importance of bravery in creativity. “If you’re working on something and you are scared to show it, you’re probably doing something right,” she advised aspiring creatives. “You have to make something YOU like. If you don’t make it from a place of pride/love, no one will like it.” This philosophy suggests that while fan enthusiasm is valued, the creative team will likely stay true to their original vision for the characters and world.

The Expanding Universe

The world of “KPop Demon Hunters” is already growing beyond the original film. In early October 2025, the franchise joined the popular game Fortnite in a major crossover event. From October 2 to November 1, players can experience the new Demon Rush Mode, where they team up with HUNTR/X to battle waves of demons. Players can also embody Rumi, Mira, and Zoey with exclusive outfits and use their signature weapons in battle.

The fandom has become so real that official light sticks for both HUNTR/X and Saja Boys went up for pre-order in late September. Created by the same company behind many real K-pop groups’ light sticks, these devices synchronize to the groups’ music, just like at a real concert. This move further blurs the line between the animated groups and real-life K-pop acts, deepening fan engagement.

The lead vocalists behind HUNTR/X – EJAE (Rumi), Audrey Nuna (Mira), and Rei Ami (Zoey) – are set to make their first live performance together on October 7 on ‘The Tonight Show,’ performing “Golden.” The artists revealed diverse musical influences, from K-pop to Black American hip-hop artists like Kendrick Lamar, Missy Elliott, and Doechii.

“His (Lamar’s) flow is insane, cadence, his way of writing, his way of vocal producing, I learned a lot from that,” shared EJAE.

As the “KPop Demon Hunters” universe continues to expand with games, merchandise, and live performances, the foundation is clearly being laid for future storytelling. The passionate fan response has undoubtedly demonstrated the hunger for more adventures with HUNTR/X, giving the creative team ample motivation to continue the journey.
